In the nineteenth year, the Retired Emperor (Genshō) fell ill, and in the fourth month of the following twentieth year, she passed away at the age of sixty-nine. For her posthumous merit, one thousand copies of the Lotus Sutra were transcribed. In the eighth month, the robes and ritual implements of Shakyamuni Buddha, as well as ceremonial procedures, were established.
In the first month of the twenty-first year, the taking of life was prohibited throughout the realm, and Gyōki was summoned and granted the title of Great Bodhisattva. In the second month, Gyōki died of illness at the age of eighty. From his youth, this monk had traveled throughout the provinces, building bridges and constructing embankments wherever he went. In places where he stayed and resided, he invariably established meditation halls. There were forty-nine such places in the capital region alone. The Emperor was deeply devoted to him.
