モイト興（ケウ）ナク思￣シ召￣ス。道鏡大ニ怒（イカツ）テ。眼ノ色ハ皿（チ）ノゴトク
赤（アカク）ナリ。其面或ハ青（アヲ）クナリ。或ハ赤クナリ。大 息（イキ）ツイデ。清
麻呂ヲ睨（ニラ）ミ申シケルハ。彼（カレ）己（ヲノレ）ガ心ヲ以テ。神詫ヲ詐（イツハ）リテ

現代語訳
かと問う。清麻呂は少しも諂うことなく、ありのままに奏聞した。天皇もとても面白くなく思し召された。道鏡は大いに怒って、目の色は血のように赤くなり、その顔は青くなったり赤くなったりした。大きく息をついて、清麻呂を睨みつけて申したことには「彼は己の心をもって、神託を偽って申しているのであろう。けしからぬことだ。死罪に処すべきである」と。天皇が「死罪まではいかがなものか」となだめられたので、道鏡は怒って、清麻呂の名を「穢麻呂」と付け替えて、その足の筋を切って、大隅国へ流した。道中で清麻呂を殺すべしと、道鏡は謀ったけれども、その折節、雷雨が激しくて、ためらっているうちに、勅使が来て死罪を思いとどまらせた。清麻呂は足の筋を切られて、歩行することができなかったが、宇佐八幡へ参詣したところ、不思議なことがあって、足の筋が忽ち治って、歩行が元のようになったということである。

how things were. Kiyomaro did not flatter in the least and reported exactly as things were. The Emperor also found it quite displeasing. Dōkyō became greatly enraged, his eyes turned red as blood, and his face alternated between blue and red. He breathed heavily and glared at Kiyomaro, saying: "He must be falsifying the divine oracle according to his own heart. This is outrageous. He should be sentenced to death." When the Emperor tried to calm him, saying "Is the death penalty not too severe?", Dōkyō angrily changed Kiyomaro's name to "Kegashi-maro" (Defiled Maro), had his leg tendons cut, and exiled him to Ōsumi Province. Dōkyō plotted to have Kiyomaro killed on the journey, but at that very moment, there was severe thunder and rain, and while they hesitated, an imperial messenger arrived to commute the death sentence. Kiyomaro, whose leg tendons had been severed and who could not walk, made a pilgrimage to Usa Hachiman, where miraculous events occurred and his leg tendons were instantly healed, allowing him to walk as before.
