シ。刀ニ手ヲカケテヲドス。清麻呂宇佐へ参詣（サンケイ）シ。是ハ国
家ノ大事ナリ。縦（タト）ヒ詫宣アリトモ。卒爾（ソツジ）ニハ信ジガタシ。

によって、私が即位すれば、汝を大臣となして、国の政治を任せるであろう。もし返事が悪ければ、重い罪に処するであろう」と言って、目を怒らせ、刀に手をかけて脅した。清麻呂は宇佐へ参詣し、「これは国家の大事である。たとえ託宣があったとしても、軽々には信じがたい。願わくは、一つの不思議を示したまえ」と祈念したところ、大神が忽ち身長三丈ばかりの姿を現して影向があった。その光は満月のようであった。清麻呂は伏し拝んで、仰ぎ見ることができなかった。神託に言うには「我が国の天つ日嗣は、神代より代々皇胤の外、臣として窺うべきものではない。況んや無道の者をや。汝帰って、ありのままに申すべし。道鏡を畏れることなかれ」と。清麻呂は元来忠節の者であるので、神託を肝に銘じて、都に帰り参内した。道鏡が御前に侍って、椅子によりかかり、清麻呂を呼んで神託を

How much less so an immoral person. You should return and report exactly as things are. Do not fear Dōkyō." Since Kiyomaro was originally a man of loyalty, he took the divine oracle to heart, returned to the capital, and entered the palace.
