遣唐使の第二船と第四船が帰朝した。小野石根と唐の使者趙宝英らが乗った第一船は、風波に遭って海に沈没した。総じて遣唐使が出発する時は、大使の船、副使の船、判官の船、主典の船として、大船四艘ずつ派遣される。
十年正月、藤原魚名を内大臣とした。
五月、大唐の使者孫興進、秦怤期らが来て進物を献上した。内裏にて饗応を設けられた。中納言石上宅嗣がその挨拶を行った。宅嗣は文才に優れた人である。その後、右大臣大中臣清麻呂の館へ唐の使者を招き、饗宴を設けた。綿三千屯を賜って帰国させた。
七月、参議中衛大将藤原百川が死去した。年四十八歳。天皇も太子も甚だ惜しまれた。この人も宇合の子である。
十一年正月、唐の使者高鶴林並びに新羅の使者金蘭蓀らが来朝した。

The second and fourth ships of the envoys to Tang China returned to Japan. The first ship carrying Ono no Iwane and the Tang envoy Zhao Baoying was caught in storms and sank at sea. Generally, when envoys to Tang China departed, they would send four large ships: the chief envoy's ship, the deputy envoy's ship, the judge's ship, and the secretary's ship.
In the first month of the tenth year, Fujiwara no Uona was appointed as Minister of the Center.
In the fifth month, Tang envoys Sun Xingjin and Qin Fuqi came and presented tribute. A banquet was held at the Imperial Palace. Middle Counselor Isonokami no Ietsugu conducted the reception. Ietsugu was a person of exceptional literary talent. Later, Right Minister Ōnakatomi no Kiyomaro invited the Tang envoys to his mansion and held a banquet. They were given 3,000 tons of cotton and sent back to their country.
In the seventh month, Counselor and Middle Captain of the Guards Fujiwara no Momokawa died at the age of forty-eight. Both the Emperor and the Crown Prince deeply mourned his loss. This person was also a son of Umakai.
In the first month of the eleventh year, Tang envoy Gao Helin and Silla envoy Kim Ranson came to court.
