現代語訳
臣であったため、髪を剃って僧となり、名を遍昭と改めた。後に花山僧正と呼ばれたのはこの人である。天皇在位の年号は、承和十四年、嘉祥三年、合わせて十七年である。
第五十五代
文徳天皇 仁明天皇の子である。御諱を道康という。母は皇后順子で、左大臣藤原冬嗣の娘である。世に五条后と申すのは、順子のことである。天皇は、仁明天皇の承和九年に太子となった。
嘉祥三年、仁明天皇が崩御した。四月、天皇が即位した。五月、嵯峨天皇の太后が崩御した。仁明天皇の御母であるから、天皇の祖母である。この太后は仏法を好み、檀林寺を建立したので、檀林皇后と号した。慧萼という僧を唐へ派遣して、禅法を問うことがあった。また学問も好んで、学館院を建てて、橘氏の者たちに読書をさせた。

Emperor Montoku was the son of Emperor Ninmyō. His personal name was Michiyasu. His mother was Empress Junshi, daughter of Left Minister Fujiwara no Fuyutsugu. What the world calls Gojō Empress refers to Junshi. The emperor became crown prince in the ninth year of Jōwa under Emperor Ninmyō.
In the third year of Kajō, Emperor Ninmyō passed away. In the fourth month, the emperor ascended the throne. In the fifth month, the Empress Dowager of Emperor Saga passed away. Since she was Emperor Ninmyō's mother, she was the emperor's grandmother. This empress dowager loved Buddhism and built Danrin-ji temple, so she was called Empress Danrin. She sent a monk named Egaku to Tang China to inquire about Zen teachings. She also loved learning and built the Gakkwan-in academy, having members of the Tachibana clan engage in reading and writing.
