五年正月、伊周を大臣に准じて、封戸を給与した。これを儀同三司という。その儀式が三公と同じであるという意味である。二月、花山法皇が崩御された。享年四十一歳。四月、中宮彰子が上東門院へ移り住まれた。これによって上東門院と申し上げる。紫式部がこの中宮にお仕えしていた。賀茂の斎院選子内親王より上東門院へ珍しい草子を所望されたため、式部に源氏物語を作らせて、斎院へ献上されたと伝えられている。
