同月、藤原兼房が太政大臣を辞任した。
建久八年四月、主上（天皇）は七条院へ行幸され、御母殖子に面会された。十二月、源頼家が従五位に叙され、右中将に任命された。
建久九年正月、主上は位を御子為仁に譲位された。太上天皇の尊号を奉った。年号は元暦一年、文治五年、建久九年で、在位は合わせて十五年であった。

In the same month, Fujiwara no Kanefusa resigned as Daijō-daijin (Chancellor).
In the fourth month of Kenkyū 8 (1197), the Emperor made an imperial visit to Shichijō-in and had an audience with his mother Shokushi. In the twelfth month, Minamoto no Yoriie was appointed to Junior Fifth Rank and made Uchū-shō (Middle Captain of the Right).
In the first month of Kenkyū 9 (1198), the Emperor abdicated the throne to his son Tamehito. He was honored with the title of Daijō Tennō (Retired Emperor). The era names were Genryaku 1 year, Bunji 5 years, and Kenkyū 9 years, with a total reign of fifteen years.
