五月六日、前征夷大将軍・太政大臣・従一位・准三宮、源義満（法名：道義）が、北山の館にて薨去された。享年五十一歳。鹿苑院殿と号し、天山と称された。勅命により太上天皇の尊号を贈られようとしたが、義持がこれを辞退して受けなかった。応安元年から応永元年まで、在職二十七年。義持に譲った後、さらに十四年。合わせて治世は四十一年に及んだ。道義（義満）は、遺跡（家督）を誰に継がせるとも申し置かれた旨がなかった。義嗣への寵愛が義持を超えていたため、（道義は）義嗣に継がせようとお考えだったのかとも思われる。しかしながら、義持はすでに家督の地位にあり、管領・斯波義将入道の勢力が強く、義持を補佐していた。
十一月、源義持が諸国の関所のことについて沙汰（処置・命令）を下した。管領・斯波右兵衛督義重が押判し、飯尾常廉が奉行した。義重は義将の子である。
十二月、大明の成祖皇帝が書状を義持に贈り、義満を弔い、祭文を作り、「泰献王」と諡（おくりな）した。

On the sixth day of the fifth month, the former Sei-i Taishōgun, Daijō-daijin, Junior First Rank, and Junsangu, Minamoto no Yoshimitsu (dharma name: Dōgi), passed away at his residence in Kitayama. He was fifty-one years of age. He was posthumously titled "Rokuonji-dono" and referred to as "Tenzan." An imperial decree was issued to bestow upon him the honorary title of Daijō Tennō (Retired Emperor), but Yoshimochi declined and did not accept it. From the first year of Ōan to the first year of Ōei, he served in office for twenty-seven years. After abdicating in favor of Yoshimochi, he continued for another fourteen years, making his total reign forty-one years. Dōgi (Yoshimitsu) left no clear instruction as to whom he wished to succeed him in his legacy. Since his affection for Yoshitsugu surpassed that for Yoshimochi, it was thought that perhaps he had intended to pass things to Yoshitsugu. However, Yoshimochi was already established as head of the family, and the kanrei Shiba Yoshimasa (lay monk) wielded great influence and supported Yoshimochi.
In the eleventh month, Minamoto no Yoshimochi issued orders regarding the checkpoints (sekisho) throughout the provinces. Kanrei Shiba Yoshishige, the Director of the Right Division of Outer Palace Guards, affixed his seal, and Iio Tsunekado served as bugyō (magistrate/administrator). Yoshishige was the son of Yoshimasa.
In the twelfth month, the Yongle Emperor (Chengzu) of the Great Ming sent a letter to Yoshimochi, mourned Yoshimitsu's death, composed a memorial text, and bestowed upon him the posthumous name "Taikен-ō" (King Taikен).
