義円は還俗して室町殿に入り、義宣と号した。同日、従五位下に叙せられ、左馬頭に任じられた。このとき三十五歳であった。
同月、准大臣・日野資国が薨去した。主上（天皇）の外祖父にあたる人物である。
四月、武家の評定始め・判始め・乗馬始めなどの儀式が行われた。義宣は従四位下に叙せられた。同月、日野の儀同三司・資教が薨去した。年七十三。資国の兄弟である。
五月、鷹司の前右大臣・冬家が薨去した。
六月、徳大寺の前太政大臣・公俊が薨去した。年五十八。
七月二十日、主上（称光天皇）が崩御された。年二十七。この御代には即位の後、改元はなかった。応永二十年から三十四年まで十五年、正長一年を加えて、合わせて在位十六年となる。この帝は魔法（密教的修法）を修し、常に潔斎されていたため、皇嗣がなかったと言い伝えられている。

Gien (義円) returned to secular life, entered the Muromachi Palace (室町殿), and took the name Yoshinobu (義宣). On the same day, he was granted the court rank of Junior Fifth Rank, Lower Grade (従五位下), and appointed Head of the Left Stables (左馬頭). He was thirty-five years of age at this time.
In the same month, Hino Sukekuni (日野資国), Acting Grand Minister (准大臣) and maternal grandfather of the reigning Emperor, passed away.
In the fourth month, the Bakufu held its inaugural ceremonies: the First Council (評定始め), the First Document Signing (判始め), and the First Horse Riding (乗馬始め), among others. Yoshinobu was promoted to Junior Fourth Rank, Lower Grade (従四位下). In the same month, Hino Sukenori (日野資教), of the rank of Gidō Sanshi (儀同三司), passed away at the age of seventy-three. From the twentieth year of Ōei (応永) to the thirty-fourth year — fifteen years in total — and adding the one year of Shōchō (正長), the reign amounted to sixteen years in total. It is said and handed down that this Emperor practiced esoteric rites (魔法) and always observed ritual abstinence (潔斎), and for this reason left no imperial heir.
