He was forty-three years old. He was posthumously granted the rank of Chancellor (Daijō-daijin). His posthumous Buddhist name was Shōjōin. Having been appointed Shogun in the first year of Ōei, and having personally governed from the fifteenth year of the same era, his rule extended to twenty-one years in total. As Yoshikazu had died young, there was no designated heir. Mochiumji of Kamakura harbored ambitions to go up to the capital, but this too proved impossible. Besides Yoshimochi's younger brother Yoshitsugu, there were four candidates: one was Hōson of the Ninnaji御室 (Omuro); another was Gien, the Jugo of Shōren-in; another was Yoshishō of the Kajii monzeki; and another was said to be Yoshiaki of the Daikakuji monzeki. While Yoshimochi was ill, the Kanrei Hatakeyama Saemon-no-kami Mitsie, the lay monk Dōtan, drew lots at the Iwashimizu Hachimangū shrine, and designated the Lord of Shōren-in as Yoshimochi's successor. On the twelfth day of the third month, the Shōren-in monzeki...
