和漢三才圖會蔓草類ニ曰
赤地利（イシミカハ） 赤薜茘 五 蕺（カウ） 五毒草

廣益地錦抄ニ曰

大和本草ニ赤地利與蝦蟆面掻載分
然共是一物ニシテ二名只分テ大小ヲ爲ル二名ト乎
去レ共草種ヲ大小其隋地ニ火肥痩亦人ノ意ノ
ヲ養ニ太肥（フウマシキ）者アリ以可知然共張良草與ビ
礬會草ノ有ルヲ屬

【草類】
『和漢三才図会』蔓草類に言う：
赤地利（いしみかわ） 赤薜茘 五蕺（ごこう） 五毒草
《ウシノハナツラ》 蛇苺 山蕎麦
和名は「いしみかわ」、また「牛の■（はなつら）」とも言う
『広益地錦抄』に言う：
赤地利（いしみかわ）、また蝦蟆面掻（かえるのつらかき）とも言う
『大和本草』では赤地利と蝦蟆面掻（かえるのつらかき）を別々に記載しているが、
そもそもこれは同一の植物であって、二つの名前は単に大小によって分けた二名に過ぎないのではないか。
しかしながら、草の種類というものは大小がその土地の条件によって変わり、土の肥痩や人が養育する際の施し方によっても、非常に肥大する（ふうましき）ものが生じることがある。このことから理解できるが、しかしながら張良草および礬会草に属するものが存在することも踏まえておくべきである。

The "Wakan Sansai Zue" (Illustrated Sino-Japanese Encyclopedia), in the section on climbing plants, states:
Sekichiri (ishimikawa) [Persicaria perfoliata] — also known as: sekiheirei, gokō, godokusō
《Ushinohanatsura》, jabichigo, yamaSoba
Japanese name: "ishimikawa," also called "Ushi no ■ (hanatsura)"
The "Kōeki Jikinsho" (Expanded Garden Plant Compendium) states:
Sekichiri (ishimikawa), also called "kaeru no tsura kaki" (frog-face scratcher)
In the "Yamato Honzō" (Japanese Materia Medica), sekichiri and kaeru no tsura kaki are listed as separate entries.
However, these are fundamentally the same plant, and the two names may simply be two designations distinguishing large and small forms.
Nevertheless, the size of plant varieties varies according to local conditions — the fertility or poverty of the soil, as well as how richly people cultivate them — and there are instances of remarkably large, well-nourished specimens arising. This much can be understood from the above; however, one must also bear in mind that there exist varieties belonging to the categories of Chōryōsō (Zhang Liang herb) and Bankaīsō (alum-associated herb).
