和漢三才圖會蔓草類に曰
赤地利（いしみかは） 赤薜茘 五蕺 五毒草
《割書：うしのはなつら｜》蛇苪 山蕎麦
以之美加波《割書：又云｜》牛の
廣益地錦抄に曰
赤地利（いしみかは） 《割書：又曰｜》蝦蟆面掻（かへるのつらかき）
大和本草に赤地利與蝦蟆面掻載分
然共是一物にめ二名只分て大小を爲る二名と乎
去れ共草種を大小其隋地に火肥痩亦人の意の
由を養に太肥（ふうましき）者あり以可知然共張良草與び
礬會草の有るを屬

政九丙戌年七月二十三日に写す
『和漢三才図会』蔓草類に言う：
赤地利（いしみかわ） 赤薜茘 五蕺 五毒草
《うしのはなづら》蛇苪 山蕎麦
「いしみかわ」《また「うしの」とも言う》
『広益地錦抄』に言う：
赤地利（いしみかわ）《また》蝦蟆面掻（かえるのつらかき）と言う
『大和本草』では赤地利と蝦蟆面掻を分けて載せているが、これは同一の植物で二つの名前があるだけで、大小を分けて二つの名前としているのだろうか。しかし草の種類は大小がその土地に従い、土の肥痩も人の意図による養育によって太って肥えたもの（立派なもの）があることは知ることができる。しかし張良草や礬会草の類もある。

The "Wakan Sansai Zue" (Illustrated Sino-Japanese Encyclopedia) in the section on climbing plants states:
Sekichiri (ishimikawa) - Red bryony, goshitsu, five poison grass
《ushinohanazura》 snake herb, mountain buckwheat
"ishimikawa"《also called "ushino"》
The "Kōeki Chikin-shō" (Comprehensive Botanical Manual) states:
Sekichiri (ishimikawa)《also called》gama mentō (frog face scratcher)
In the "Yamato Honzō" (Japanese Materia Medica), sekichiri and gama mentō are listed separately, but these are the same plant with two names, perhaps distinguishing between large and small varieties with two different names. However, the size of plant species depends on the locality and soil fertility, and through human cultivation there can be ones that grow thick and luxuriant (magnificent ones), as can be understood. However, there are also those belonging to the chōryōsō (Dioscorea) and bankaiso types.
