杜鵑草には二種の花がある。花の色が白く、淡紫色の斑点を持つものを「山杜鵑」と言う。『地錦抄』の図の上を考えるに、これを写したものは山杜鵑草である。単に「杜鵑」とのみ称するものとは少々異なる。しかしながら、別種というわけでもないのである。

The "Wakan Sansai Zue" (Illustrated Sino-Japanese Encyclopedia), in the section on moisture-loving plants, states:
Dukengusa (hototogisu) [toad lily] — the common name is the same as the proper name;
the proper name is unknown.

The "Bukō Sanbutsu-shi" (Record of Products of Edo) states:
Aburatten-so (hototogisu) [oil-spotted plant]
On the fifth day of the first period of Nanryo (the eighth month), year Hinoe-Inu [1826],
a stem was gathered at Dōkanzan,
and one illustration was made.

The dukengusa (hototogisu) has two varieties of flower. The one with white flowers bearing pale purple spots is called "yama-dukengusa" (mountain toad lily). Upon examining the illustration in the "Jikinsho," the specimen depicted therein corresponds to the yama-dukengusa. It differs slightly from what is simply called "dukengusa" (toad lily). Nevertheless, they are not to be regarded as entirely separate species.
