私（毛利梅園）が考察するに、杜鵑草には二種の花がある。
白色で淅紫の点がある者を山杜鵑と言う。『地錦抄』の図を考察するに、
これで写したのは山杜鵑草である。ただ杜鵑とのみ称する
ものは少し異なるが、しかし別種ではない
であろう。

The "Bukō Sanbutsu-shi" (Record of Musashi Province Products) states:
Oil-spot grass (hototogisu)
On the fifth day of early eighth month, Hinoe-Inu year
Looking toward Mount Dōkan, broke off a stem
and drew one illustration
According to my (Mōri Baien's) observation, there are two types of toad lily flowers.
The white-colored ones with light purple spots are called mountain toad lily (yama-toketsu).
Examining the illustration in the "Chikin-shō" (Botanical Manual),
what was depicted here is the mountain toad lily. Those that are simply called
"toad lily" are slightly different, but they are probably not
separate species.
