At the Gojō Tenjin Shrine in Kyoto, crowds gather every New Year's Eve to pray for the warding off of pestilence. In front of the shrine, there are those who sell white wood (hakuboku), and everyone seeks to purchase it. The practice of taking sōjutsu (Atractylodes lancea) at the New Year is perhaps a ritual for the removal of pestilence. Drawn from life on the full moon day of the eighth month, Hinoe-Inu year Listed in "Yamato Honzō" under 【Medicinal Plants】 The "Honzō Wage" (Japanese Commentary on the Materia Medica) states: Byakujutsu (White Atractylodes) 《Alternative names》: Mountain thistle (山薊), Hōkei, Yōhō, Hōma, Mountain ginger (山薑), Sanren, Kitsurika Japanese name: Okera (平介良) Sōjutsu (Black Atractylodes) 《Alternative names》: Red-朮 (赤朮), Mountain essence (山精), Immortal-朮 (仙朮), Mountain thistle (山薊) Japanese name: Aka-okera (阿訶平許羅) Li Shizhen states that in ancient prescriptions, both types of朮 were used interchangeably. Later scholars made the distinction between sō (dark) and haku (white) varieties. Kou Zongshi states that sōjutsu has a pungent and intense flavor, while byakujutsu is mildly bitter and pungent, but not intense. ○ When used separately in medicinal prescriptions, the efficacies differ — how could they be the same? Old roots are called byakujutsu, and young roots are named sōjutsu. Just as with qiānghuó (羌活) and shúhuó (蜀活), within a single plant, there is a difference between young and old. These are the two朮 of Japan (Yamato), while in China the two朮 are one group with two distinct species — this is self-evident. The Japanese and Chinese plants resemble each other, differing only in flower color. In Japan, the two types are perhaps not distinguished and are both called simply okera (平介良). Motokazu (Mōri Baien) humbly considers: Of the two species divided between Japan and China, the one whose flower is illustrated here is sōjutsu (Black Atractylodes). Below the illustration of byakujutsu, this will be further discussed.
