細ニ而似リ 薊花（アザミ）ニ故ニ薊ノ名アリ此
者五十四種ニシテ有アリ黄白赤
紫 黄紅（カバ）薄色ノ花故ニ国俗
五十四種ヲ相別チ名付ル源氏ノ
巻ノ名ヲ異■■其數難寫ス故載シテ

薊花菊（アザミギク）

環（著者）曰く、
薊菊を考察するに、近年になって現れたものであり、
諸本草書等には記載されていない。その花の形が
細かく、薊の花（アザミ）に似ているため、薊の名がある。この
種は五十四種あり、黄・白・赤・
紫・黄紅（かば色）・薄色の花がある。ゆえに国の慣習として
五十四種をそれぞれ区別して名付けるに、源氏物語の
巻の名をもってそれぞれ異なる名とする。その数は書き記し難いため、
二種を載せて諸品の数に加える。

The author (Kan) states:
Upon examining the thistle chrysanthemum, it is a plant that has appeared only in recent times,
and is not recorded in any of the various herbals. Its flower form is
delicate and resembles the thistle flower (azami), hence the name "thistle."
There are fifty-four varieties of this plant, bearing flowers of yellow, white, red,
purple, yellow-red (kaba color), and pale hues. Therefore, following local custom,
the fifty-four varieties are each distinguished and named after chapters
of The Tale of Genji, each with a different name. As it is difficult to record all of them,
two varieties are illustrated here and added to the collection of various specimens.
