千本槍は、すなわちこの匙頭菜のことである。
春、正月に苗を生じ、三月に花をつける。その花はタンポポ（蒲公英）に似て、最も小さく、紅白色である。花が終わると綿毛（絮）をつくる。その苗は夏に向かって最もよく茂り、六月になると花茎を数十本余り抜き出す。その形は図のとおりである。そのつぼみは、（自ら開こうとしながらも）自らは開かずに終わる。これは、その形状から「千本鎗」と名づけたのである。一年のうちに二度花をつけるものは、（植物の中でも）他に例がない。正式な（春の）花については、「春之部」第三巻に記載した。（この植物は）一種で二つの名をもち、一種（のうちの）変花のものは少ない。
地錦抄においては、この説をいまだ確かめていない。梅園（直脚）は、数種の草を自分の園圃（庭の畑）に植えて育て、花の形からその草を考察し、その名を記すにあたって的確さを得た。これを奇種と呼ぶのは、（まさに）匙頭菜（センボンヤリ）であろう。

That which opens its flowers in spring is called *Shitōsai* (匙頭菜, *Hitōzai*);
that which sends up a flower stalk in autumn but does not open its flowers is called *Senbon'yari* (千本鎗, "Thousand Spears").

*Senbonyari* (千本槍) is none other than this *Shitōsai* (匙頭菜).
In spring, it puts forth seedlings in the first month, and flowers in the third month. Its flowers closely resemble those of the dandelion (*Tampopo*, 蒲公英), though considerably smaller, and are pinkish-white in color. After the flowers fall, it produces downy seed-heads (絮, *ho*). The seedlings grow most vigorously as summer approaches, and by the sixth month, the plant sends up several dozen or more flower stalks. The form of the plant is as shown in the illustration. The buds, poised as if about to open, in fact never open, and simply cease. It is from this characteristic form that the name "Senbon'yari" (Thousand Spears) was given. There is no other plant that flowers twice in a single year. The plant's proper (spring) flowers are recorded in Volume 3 of the *Spring Section*. It is one species with two names, and the variation (*henka*) that belongs to this single species is rare.
As for the *Chikinsho* — the explanation given therein has not yet been fully verified. Baien (Chokkyaku) cultivated several kinds of grasses in his own garden plot, and by examining each plant from the form of its flowers, he arrived at the proper assignment of names with accuracy. The plant that may rightfully be called a "remarkable species" (*kishu*) is surely this *Shitōsai* (Senbon'yari).
