## Hasu (蓮 / Lotus, *Nelumbo nucifera*) **From *Wakan Sansai Zue* (和漢三才図会, Illustrated Encyclopedia of Japan, China, and the World), section on Water Fruits:** Upon reflection: The lotus grows from the mud, yet remains pure and clean; by its nature it abhors filth — excrement, urine, oils, and offal. Zhou Maoshu (Zhou Dunyi) once said: "The chrysanthemum is a thing of reclusive virtue; the peony is a thing of wealth and rank; the lotus flower is a thing of the gentleman-scholar (*kunshi*)." Furthermore, the reason all the Buddhas delight in taking the lotus blossom as their seat is simply that they too take the meaning of purity from it — nothing more. --- *(Sketched from life at Kaika-en [Sophora Blossom Garden] on the third day of the middle period of early autumn [7th lunar month] in the year Kinoto-Tori. Seal: "Water Grasses")* --- **The author states:** The lotus is a single plant for which many different names are used for its parts. The root is called *gū* (藕); the seed/fruit is called *ren* (蓮); it is also known as *gū-jitsu* (藕実), *teki* (菂), *kyū* (薂), *sekiren-shi* (石蓮子), *suishi* (水芝, "water *zhi* fungus"), and *takuji* (沢芝, "marsh *zhi*"). The leaf is called *ka* (荷); when young and tender, it is called *kasen* (荷銭, "lotus coin"); those that lie flat upon the water's surface are called *kūka* (藕荷); those that rise above the water are called *kika* (芰荷), and it is from these that the flowers bloom. *Renzuishū* (蓮蕊鬚) refers to the stamens of the lotus flower, which are also called *butsuzashū* (仏座鬚, "Buddha's seat stamens"). *Renbana* (蓮鼻) refers to the receptacle/calyx base. *Renbo* (蓮房, "lotus chamber") refers to the seed pod surrounding the seeds; because it resembles a honeycomb (*hōbō*, 蜂房), it is called *hachisu*, of which *hasu* is an abbreviated form. Furthermore: the stem is called *gūsetsu* (藕節). Among all plants, the lotus stands foremost in the number of its individual parts — flower, leaf, stem, root, seed, and so on — that are put to use. --- **From *Tashikiden* (多識編), section on Water Fruits, under the entry for *Ren'ō* (蓮藕):** Lotus Flower (*renka* / 蓮花) Japanese name: *Hachisu no hana*; also *Hasu no hana* Alternative names: *Fuyō* (芙蓉) [from *Kokon-chū* (古今注)], *Fukyō* (芙蕖) [same source], *Suika* (水華, "water blossom")
