大和本草曰
錦茘枝 一名つるれいしと云
予曰
又別に龍茘あり是は
古禮伊志と云茘枝は加羅久多毛乃
と云夷果也龍眼のたくび也國俗苦瓜
を茘枝と書り非なり苦瓜は蔓草
なり民籬棚に蔓を引り實秋に至
て熟す如瓜皮は茘枝に似ておぼ多
し熟め黄なり皮さけて瓤あらは
る紅色なり皮瓤の色うるはし
小兒好て食す

現代語訳
乙酉初秋十四日に写す
多識編の蓏菜類に曰く
苦瓜（くうり） 和名は今按ずるに蔓（つる）、別名は礼伊志（れいし） 異名は錦茘枝 癩葡萄（らいぶどう）
大和本草に曰く
錦茘枝 一名つるれいしという
予が曰く
また別に竜茘がある。これは
古い礼伊志というもので、茘枝は唐果の
ことをいう外国の果物である。竜眼の類である。国俗では苦瓜
を茘枝と書くが、これは間違いである。苦瓜は蔓草
である。民家では垣根や棚に蔓を這わせる。実は秋に至
って熟す。瓜のようで、皮は茘枝に似て多くの
瘤がある。熟すと黄色になる。皮が裂けて瓤が現れ
ると紅色である。皮と瓤の色が美しく、
小児が好んで食べる。

In the Tashikihen, under the category of creeping vegetables, it states:
Bitter gourd (ku-uri) Japanese name according to current investigation is tsuru (vine), alternative name is reishi Other names include brocade lychee and lai-budō (scabby grape)
In the Yamato Honzō it states:
Brocade lychee Also called tsuru-reishi
I say:
There is also separately the dragon lychee. This is
what is called the ancient reishi, and lychee refers to
Chinese fruits, which are foreign fruits. They are relatives of the longan. In popular usage, bitter gourd
is written as lychee, but this is incorrect. Bitter gourd is a creeping plant.
Common people train the vines on fences and trellises. The fruit ripens
in autumn. It is like a gourd, with skin resembling lychee and many
bumps. When ripe it becomes yellow. The skin splits and the flesh appears,
which is red in color. The colors of the skin and flesh are beautiful,
and children enjoy eating it.
