...is where (the wood-boring larva transforms). During the summer months, they gather above fragrant trees, as well as citrus and yuzu trees, and lay their eggs on the surface of the leaves. The eggs hatch into caterpillars (蠋), and those caterpillars further transform into Kisha (demon carriage butterflies, i.e., Ki-ageha/Yellow Swallowtail).
Kuro-fuchō (Black Butterfly)
【Left Page】
In the illustrations of the *Honzō Kōmoku Keimō*, this is named "Kuro-fuchō" (Black Butterfly) — it belongs to the category of Genbu-semi, and is a particularly large specimen, entirely black in color. ○ Furthermore, the *Kōmoku Yakusetsu* states: the very largest of these measure approximately one shaku (about 30 cm). In recent years, there was an occasion when Japanese butterfly specimens were being collected at Kamigamo in Yamashiro Province, and at that time a very large butterfly was found.
