下候重説之口 宣は何れの例ヲ以頂戴仕候哉ト却而トガ
メ申候也
○氏人申云只今化安老殿下之御目ニカケラレ候重秋之職之
口宣之例ヲ以申上候也則重秋は重説カヒヲホヂニテ御
座候也
○社司申云重説は権祝之拝賀イタシ候哉
○氏人申云拝賀仕候社司方の拝賀仕り候と申ニ却而不番
御座候口 宜頂戴仕候と其侭拝賀いたすニ右之口上ニ
口宣近代頂戴不仕候由ヲ被申然らハ社司方の拝賀ト
申は叙爵ナトノ拝賀之事ヲ申候哉
○社司申云他社之社司之子来り而継申例は在之トイ
ヘトモ氏人ノ継例は無之候

（前頁より続き）……（任命が）下らなかった。「重説の口宣は、いかなる先例をもって頂戴したのか」と、かえって（社司方から）とがめ申した。
○ 氏人、申して云く、「只今、化安老殿が（関白殿の）御目にかけられました重秋の職の口宣の先例をもって申し上げたものでございます。すなわち、重秋は重説の曾祖父にあたられます。」
○ 社司、申して云く、「重説は権祝の拝賀を行いましたか。」
○ 氏人、申して云く、「拝賀いたしました。社司方が『拝賀いたした』と申すことに対して、かえって（文句を）言わずにおられましょうか。口宣を頂戴してそのまま拝賀いたしましたところ、（社司方は）先の口上において『口宣は近代においては頂戴していない』と申された。ならば、社司方の言う拝賀というのは、叙爵などの拝賀のことを申しているのでしょうか。」
○ 社司、申して云く、「他社の社司の子が来て（職を）継いだ先例はございます。しかしながら、氏人が（社司職を）継いだ先例はございません。」
○ 氏人、申して云く、「他社の者でさえ先例をもって継ぐと申すならば、まして賀茂県主の氏人が（その）次例として相続申すべき者でございます。」
○ 社司、申して云く、「氏人が継がなかった先例としては、松下元久が四歳にして神主に任じられたことがございます。」
○ 氏人、申して云く、「元久は松下の惣領（嫡子）でございますので、二歳の者であってもつがせるべきでございます。それ以外の（家が）欠けた際の職は、氏人でなければ誰が……（次頁へ続く）」

(Continued from previous page) ——[the appointment] was not issued. [The *shashi* side] retorted: "By what precedent did Jūsetsu receive his *kuzen*?"
○ The *ujibito* stated: "It was submitted on the basis of the precedent of the *kuzen* for the office of Shigéaki (*Jūshū*), which Kaan the Elder just presented for [the Kampaku's] inspection. Namely, Jūshū was Jūsetsu's great-grandfather."
○ The *shashi* stated: "Did Jūsetsu perform the *haiga* (formal congratulatory audience) for the office of *gongohaku*?"
○ The *ujibito* stated: "He did perform the *haiga*. Shall we not object to the *shashi* side's claim that they performed the *haiga*? [Jūsetsu] received the *kuzen* and proceeded with the *haiga* as was proper. Yet in their earlier statement, [the *shashi* side] claimed that 'in recent times, a *kuzen* for the office has not been received.' In that case, when the *shashi* side speaks of '*haiga*,' are they referring to a *haiga* for the conferment of court rank (*joshaku*) and the like?"
○ The *shashi* stated: "There are precedents for the son of a *shashi* from another shrine coming and succeeding to the office. However, there is no precedent for an *ujibito* succeeding to the position."
○ The *ujibito* stated: "If even a person from another shrine may succeed by precedent, then all the more so should a member of the *ujibito* (*ujigami* people) of the Kamo *agataonushi* (district chieftains) be the one to succeed in order of precedence."
○ The *shashi* stated: "As a precedent for an *ujibito* not succeeding, there is the case of Matsushita Motohisa, who was appointed *kannagi* (*shinushi*, shrine priest) at the age of four."
○ The *ujibito* stated: "As Motohisa was the *sōryō* (legitimate heir) of the Matsushita [family], even if [the heir] were two years old, he should be made to succeed. As for other vacant offices, who other than an *ujibito* would——" [text continues on following page]
