(Continued from previous page) …without heeding the official directives (gechī), and without following the mediation (kuchire) of the shrine administration (shamu), they submitted a complaint petition entirely according to their own whims (gai). This conduct is utterly beyond the bounds of acceptable speech and behavior (gongow dōdan). The above articles are herewith submitted in full for your august consideration, and with deep reverence, in hopes that they may be presented to the august ear (gosōmon), this general account (arамashi) is respectfully submitted as stated above. Entoku 3rd year (1491), 3rd month, [day not specified] [This document serves as] a draft (an) from the Three Rooms (Sangen), submitted simultaneously by the entire shrine (ichisha) in the same 3rd month. The shrine officials (shikan) and ujibito (shrine people/clan members) of Kamo Shrine respectfully submit the following: Item: Regarding the matter of submitting a memorial (jōhyō) for the position of hōri (祝職). An official directive letter (gobusho) was issued on the 25th day of the 10th month of last year, and thereafter several further official orders (gochī) were issued; yet now, at this late stage, they submit a statement claiming that no memorial was presented — this is utterly beyond the bounds of reason and language (gongō dōdan). From this single matter, one can infer all others: everything they have submitted is entirely fabricated (kyogon). Item: Regarding the matter referred to as "old debt" (kyūshakusen) in Fuke and Hakozukuri estate (shō). As submitted in the previous article, this was something of which the entire shrine had no prior knowledge. Accordingly, Shigenori (重則) made inquiries of relatives regarding the matter, and they gave a full account of the affairs from the time of the previous regulations (senki), the Enryū era, and the Enkyū era. Furthermore, when a dispute (sōron) arose with the peasants (hyakushō) over the matter of Hakozukuri estate, since the estate's public document officer (kumon) was a retainer (hikan) of both provincial military governors (ryōshugо), it was lamented that they had lent their armed support (gōriki) to the opposition. Thereupon, an official directive was issued from the military authorities (buke), 10,000 hiki (疋) of goods belonging to the provincial governor (shugo) were seized, and it was determined that, as long as shrine rituals (jinji) continued to be carried out, the debt would not apply. Even when thirty-six members of the provincial ujizoku (clan group) formed a combined organization (kumi), it was not possible to borrow the funds in question; yet despite this, some have falsely reported partial facts and, coveting the shrine's resources, have made groundless submissions. This is beyond all reckoning (sata no kagiri de wa nai). Given all of the above, from this time forward, such scheming and plotting (bōkei) must be ordered to cease.
