...refused to consent. Nevertheless, Benedetti repeatedly pressed him and urged a reply, in order to obtain a definitive answer regarding his government's demands. ○ Some hours later, the envoy requested a third audience, whereupon the King sent someone to ask what he had come for. The envoy replied, saying, "For no other reason than that this morning's discussion was not yet concluded, and I wish to discuss the matter anew." ○ The King replied that he had nothing further to say beyond what he had already answered, and that as he happened to have a visitor with whom he was presently engaged, he was unable to meet with him. Furthermore, the King remarked, was it not the case that all negotiations concerning affairs of state should be conducted through the proper officials in charge of such matters?
