王に対してかくも使節としての礼を失することは、全く一時の状況から生じたやむを得ない事情によるものである。○突然に王に迫って議論したことが、どうして不敬でないと言えようか。ただ、この時期においては事態が切迫していたためである。公使はその前夜に新聞を手に入れ、いかにしてこの事を処すべきか、その段取りを熟慮焦慮すること、少なくとも十二時間を費やした後に行ったことであるからである。○この一大戯場（芝居）を観るにあたって、数多の観客はみな自己の見解をもってその結末がいかようになるかを察するに、各々驚き怖れる色を顕わすことをもって、その事の尋常ならざることを知るべきである。○

That the envoy should have so failed in the proper ceremonial courtesy due to the King arose entirely from circumstances of the moment that made it unavoidable. ○ How could one say that suddenly pressing the King and engaging him in argument was not disrespectful? However, this was because the situation had become urgent at that juncture. The envoy had obtained a newspaper the night before, and had spent no fewer than twelve hours in careful and anxious deliberation over how the matter ought to be handled — only then did he act. ○ In surveying this grand theatre of events, the many spectators who observed the outcome each according to their own judgment all displayed expressions of shock and alarm, and from this one may well understand how extraordinary the affair truly was. ○
