御書翰を拝読いたした。私はあえて驚きもしない。ただ、貴師が懇切丁寧にご教訓くださった芳志に深く感動した次第である。まことに、神の霊妙なる声を聞く思いがした。
〇どうして私の心において、このような尊き講和の裁定を受けることを厭おうか。神は在しまし、私も国民も皆、戦を好まず、必ずや乱を起こさぬことを、どうかご存知おきいただきたい。
神より我が国の上下の人々に諭されたところの神聖なる教えを奉じるべきである。我が国の独立を守り、かつ国辱を受けないために、かつて国事が安穏であった……

I have had the honor of reading Your Holiness's sacred letter. I am not particularly astonished, but I am deeply moved by the kind and earnest spirit of instruction with which you have written. Indeed, it felt as though I were hearing the wondrous voice of God Himself.
〇Why should I be reluctant, in my heart, to receive such a noble arbitration for peace? God is present; both I and my people do not desire war, and please be assured that we shall not willfully provoke conflict.
We shall uphold the sacred teachings imparted by God to all people of our nation, high and low alike. In order to preserve our nation's independence and to avoid national humiliation, there was once a time when our national affairs were at peace...
