（その書肆の某が）一冊を持参し、丁重に序文を求めてきた。題して『山海名産図会』という。これを手に取って紐解いてみると、我が東方（日本）の各地において、その土地の産物として、珍しい種類や異なる味わいを持ち、特に名高いものを、一つ一つ図に表している。さらには、その製作の始末や事実の証拠については、後に附釈を加え、婦人や子供の類であっても、これを知ることができるようにしている。まことに、私の当初の願いに応えてくれるものがあると思われた。

(The bookseller) brought a volume and earnestly requested a preface. It was titled "Illustrated Survey of Famous Mountain and Sea Products of Japan" (Nihon Sankai Meisan Zukai). Taking it up and leafing through it, I found that the notable products of each region of our eastern land (Japan)—those of rare variety and distinctive flavor that have earned particular fame—were each depicted in illustration. Furthermore, regarding the details of their production and factual evidence, supplementary notes were added afterward, so that even women and children would be able to understand them. I found this to be quite in keeping with my original wish.
