五月朔日足汰之日記
一 四月廿七八日比一種物ト馬案内ト認晦日暁歟朔日
朝歟神人二人来リ二通渡之点ヲ取テ返ル也着座有
之番立真ニ書之也一ハ仮名ニ書検断ニ渡之所司

一 同晦日早朝馬場ノ埒結フ結手定テ有之外ハ沙
汰人捌也奉行ハ代官衆之役也日記ヲ以改ムル也

五月朔日足汰の日記
一、四月二十七、八日頃、一種物と馬案内を認め、晦日の暁か朔日の朝か、神人二人が来て二通を渡し、点検を取って返る。着座があり、番立を真に書く。一つは仮名に書き、検断に渡す。所司が調える。
一、同じく晦日早朝、馬場の埒を結う。結び手は定まっているが、それ以外は沙汰人が裁く。奉行は代官衆の役である。日記をもって改める。
代官衆日記に云う、

埒杙の数は、東が二百二十一本、西が二百十九本である。

Diary of the Ashiarai (Horse Selection) on the First Day of the Fifth Month
1. Around the twenty-seventh and twenty-eighth days of the fourth month, the "ichishu-mono" (special offerings) and horse guidance documents are prepared. Either at dawn on the last day of the month or on the morning of the first day, two shrine attendants (jin-nin) come to deliver two documents, receive confirmation, and return. There is a seating ceremony, and the horse roster is written in earnest. One document is written in kana script and delivered to the inspector (kendan). The administrator (shoshi) prepares it.
1. On the same last day of the month, early in the morning, the barriers of the horse grounds are erected. The workers for this are predetermined, but other matters are handled by the deliberation officials (sata-nin). The magistrate (bugyo) serves as the representative officials' role. This is reformed according to the diary.
The diary of the representative officials states:

If the barriers are damaged on the first day, the representative officials will examine them and direct workers to re-erect them.
The number of barrier stakes: 221 on the east side, 219 on the west side.
