1. On the morning of the second day, after breakfast, immediately send the water service maids to the sake hall for rice pounding
The three first riders get three shō of rice, with one shō added due to reciprocal entertainment. The other seventeen people
are each sent with two shō of rice
Though this is the standard, if sending them, have them carry five gō or one shō of rice. Same applies to first riders
Also have them carry a jūroku-mon bucket and send them to Nara River to collect small stones. At this time they also gather mugwort
(Small stones are for placing in iris arrangements, mugwort likewise) However, in Kanpō 2 (1742), rice pounding was suspended due to shrine reconstruction. Details are recorded later
1. On the second day, after returning from the sake hall, send them to draw water from the Mono-imi River in a hand bucket. The hand bucket should have a mesh covering
when sent (Used for hand washing when the yin-yang master visits tomorrow on the third day, and also for iris wrapping)
1. On the second day, attach mesh coverings to the gate, purification room, storage chest, and hand bucket (Total of five strands to be commissioned. One strand is for
covering and binding the tower chest)
[Left page]
1. On the second day, prepare one clean pole (Needed for hanging ceremonial garments from tomorrow)
1. On the second day, send someone to the first rider to collect five chimaki rice dumplings in one bundle (Since we have previously informed them where to collect them,
send them to that place)
These chimaki are presented when the yin-yang master comes for the purification ceremony tomorrow on the third day
1. In Kanpō 2 (1742), after consultation among the riders, sending maids to pound rice at the imperial quarters on the second day was suspended
The reason being: traditionally, during the period of separate fire from the third day, they were sent to pound rice at the sake hall, but recently separate fire practices have also
been suspended, making this practice unnecessary. Moreover, this year due to shrine reconstruction, magistrates and various people from Kyoto
frequent the shrine area, and it seemed improper for several water service maids to travel together as usual, engaging in loud conversations and unrestrained
behavior. It was decided through consultation that it would be better to have riders arrange with two or three, or four or five nearby houses to send them only to gather small stones and mugwort,
so rice pounding was suspended this year
1. Prepare stuffed sea bream, one piece of dried bonito, and two myōga bamboo shoots (Stuffed sea bream consists of two small salted
small sea bream)
