These are the details of why it should be removed. Moreover, when Yoshiuji was young, he observed elderly riders, and they all removed it. Not removing it is a recent practice. Therefore, this time I inquired about these details from Elder Kiyoshige, and he answered as written above. Thus, I record what I have seen and heard as guidance for junior colleagues.
The theory of not removing it is merely a superficial notion that removal makes the waist unstable and creates poor appearance - there is no theory supported by documentary evidence or written records.
1. Regarding whether riders should wear iris belts on the 5th day - This was debated in the second year of Kanpō.
Upon consultation, some argued that since riders attach replacement iris to their collars, this ceremony should not be necessary. However, it was decided that since it is worn even over court dress by lower-ranking officials, and moreover it is a special celebratory item for the Boys' Festival, it should be worn.
1. On the 5th day, after the horse race concludes, when receiving the divine offerings at the office building, the cap cords are removed.
[Left page]
In ancient times they were not removed at this time, but recently the theory that they should be removed after receiving divine offerings and completing the brief ceremony is considered proper.
1. On the 5th day, the food boxes are taken back by the water-drawing maidservants after lunch concludes. In the evening, they should be sent to the shrine precincts with the water-drawing and placed in the small office before returning.
In the second year of Kanpō, following someone's suggestion, we had them taken directly from the horse grounds to the shrine precincts and left there. Later there were bad rumors that while others took everything back with them, only I and one other person left things directly at the shrine precincts - people questioned whether this was appropriate. For future years, do it this way.
1. After the riders withdraw on the 5th day, they should go to make courtesy calls on close acquaintances.
However, those who served as representatives should have the actual person appear tomorrow. Today they are excused due to fatigue.
1. On the 6th day, early morning, send the water-drawing maidservants to the pilgrimage quarters to collect bedding.
1. On the 6th day, after breakfast, go early to worship at Kifu Shrine and bring placement offerings and divided offerings (either the person himself or a representative), whichever...
