　後宇多院新院と申しける比にや冨小路殿
　大栁懸の本に香のひとへなるかんの御そにつま
　くれなゐの御扇二まはりほねを折かけて御う
　しろにひらめかしてつらせ給し殊勝の御氣色
　無雙の御振舞なりきと故大納言入道
　物語せられ侍き

一付鞠於杖事
　枝は柳櫻松鶏冠木春秋にしたかひて花紅葉
　年始の松以下尤たよりあるへし梅はかりに用
　侍れと鞠つくることむかしよりいまたなし而先年
　将軍家鞠に式普代の人付けて後難ありけん
　もことはりなり八月朔日萩の花さきみたれ
　たるえくつに付　人のもとへ送之幽玄の例なり
　とて左様つは不受之氣侍き付様にて鷹飼の
　とし葉に雉付侍らんことし五尺の枝に上より
　二尺に付枝侍へし其枝にしんのえたかけて付
　へし鞠より下一尺五寸にまりのくゝり目にむきて
　小枝一有かへし最下のえたを此此えたはなき

現代語訳

後宇多院が新院と申し上げていた頃でしょうか、冨小路殿が大柳懸かりの本で、香色の単衣の狩衣の御袖に褄が紅色の御扇を二回ほど骨を折りかけて御後ろにひらめかせて連ねなさった、殊勝な御様子、無双の御振る舞いでありましたと、故大納言入道が物語りなされました。

一、鞠を杖に付ける事について
枝は柳・桜・松・鶏頭木など、春秋に従って花や紅葉、年始の松以下、最も趣があるべきです。梅ばかりを用いることもありますが、鞠を作ることは昔から今まで（梅では）ありません。しかし先年、将軍家の蹴鞠に式部の普代の人が（鞠を）付けて後に難があったのも道理です。八月朔日、萩の花が咲き乱れた枝に付けて人のもとへ送ったところ、幽玄の例だといって、そのような津波は受けないという気持ちがありました。付け方については、鷹飼いの年の葉に雉を付けるように、今年は五尺の枝の上から二尺のところに枝を付けるべきです。その枝に真の枝をかけて付けるべきです。鞠より下一尺五寸で鞠の括り目に向けて小枝を一つ設け、返しとして最下の枝を、この枝はなく（します）。

During the time when Emperor Go-Uda was called the New Retired Emperor, Lord Tominokoji at the base of the great willow hanging, with sleeves of incense-colored unlined hunting robes and fans with crimson hems, folded the ribs about twice and made them flutter behind him in succession - this was a most admirable appearance and an unparalleled behavior, as the late Great Counselor-Priest related in his stories.

One: Concerning the Matter of Attaching Balls to Poles
The branches should be willow, cherry, pine, cockscomb tree, etc., following spring and autumn with flowers and autumn leaves; New Year's pine and others would be most appropriate. Though only plum is sometimes used, making balls has never been done (with plum) from ancient times until now. However, in recent years, when a hereditary retainer of the Bureau of Ceremonies attached (a ball) to the Shogun's kemari, it was reasonable that difficulties arose afterward. On the first day of the eighth month, when bush clover flowers were blooming in profusion, one was attached to a branch and sent to someone's residence, and when it was called an example of refined elegance, there was a feeling of not accepting such a tsunami. Regarding the method of attachment, like attaching a pheasant to a falconer's annual leaves, this year a branch should be attached two shaku from the top of a five-shaku branch. A true branch should be hung on that branch and attached. One shaku and five sun below the ball, facing toward the ball's binding point, a small branch should be provided as a return, and the lowest branch - this branch should be removed.
