　畠（ハタケ）の庭とて《振り仮名：名-誉｜メイヨ》の鞠場あり小年（セウネム）のむかし見
　侍りしかは桜の古木四本侍き《振り仮名：後伏見院｜　　フシミノ　　》老若（ヲイワカ）の
　御鞠も此場にてあそはされし也 彼（カノ）庭はふかさ一
　丈 堀（ホリ）て底（ソコ）五尺に塩（シホ）をうつみ其上五尺に土（ツチ）をよくふる

　雨（ウ）にも晴間（ハレマ）待え侍れは水とくひきてやかて鞠の

現代語訳

畠の庭という名誉ある蹴鞠場がある。小年の昔に見たことがあるが、桜の古木が四本あった。後伏見院老君の御鞠もこの場で行われたのである。そこでは深さ一丈まで掘り、底に五尺分の塩を埋め、その上に土をよく篩にかけて置いている。日照りでも湿り気があって灰を叩く（？）。春の長雨にも晴れ間を待っていれば、水がすぐに引いて、やがて蹴鞠の会が開かれる。また後に岡本入道関白家で庭を立派に作った時、拝見したところ、やはり一丈ほど掘って、底には瓦をそこに敷いて、その上に土を篩にかけて置いているのを見た。木は奉行が担当したと、庭で家僕たちが話していた。水の引き方についてはこれも最上である。清らかなことだが、五條大納言国綱卿は蹴鞠場を見事に奉行したゆえに立身したということである。詳細は別のことなので記すには及ばない。また網というのは、あるいは屏風または立蔀の側に麻を組んで青く染めて掛けて差したものである。秘説があるはずである。

There is a renowned kemari court called Hatake no niwa (Field Garden). When I saw it in my youth long ago, there were four old cherry trees. Emperor Go-Fushimi's kemari games were also played at this venue. There, they dug to a depth of one jō, buried salt five shaku deep at the bottom, and placed well-sifted soil on top. Even during droughts, there is moisture, and [unclear reference to ash]. Even during long spring rains, if one waits for clear intervals, the water drains quickly and kemari gatherings can soon be held. Later, when the Okamoto Lay Priest Regent's household constructed an elaborate garden, upon inspection, I saw that they similarly dug about one jō deep, laid roof tiles at the bottom, and placed sifted soil on top. The household servants were discussing in the garden that the wood was handled by the magistrate. This method of water drainage is also supreme. Though it is a pure matter, it is said that Fifth Avenue Major Counselor Kunitsuna rose in rank because he excellently supervised kemari courts. The details are separate matters, so there is no need to record them. What is called "net" refers to hemp woven together, dyed blue, and hung and placed beside screens or standing portable screens. There should be secret teachings about this.
