高株と呼ばれるものは便利ではない。もっぱら毎年伐採して使用するのが良い。土地の人の説明によると、およそ桑樹栽培の田畑は砂礫が混じった河岸に適しており、山麓あるいは家屋に接する土地は良くない。これは他でもなく、水分が多いのを好まないからである。
第四章
そもそも河岸の田園は長雨の時期に水流が激しく荒れ狂うけれども、乾燥するのも速く、四方が開けて大気の流通が適度である。このような土地に生育するものは葉が厚く、蓄えている栄養分が蚕を養うのに適している。

第五章
山麓や家屋に接する土地は概して風通しが悪く湿った土地であるため、桑の性質上自然に含む水分が多い。肥沃な田園に栽培したものもまたこれに類している。なぜなら野菜や穀類を植えた四方の境界に桑を植え、その価値が高いために株と株の距離が最も近く、あるいは園全体に桑を植えてますます密集を極め、繁茂するにつれて土地が乾燥する暇もなく、うっとうしさが甚だしい。たとえば植木が温室に生育したかのようである。これがその良くない理由である。
