しかしながら、また他の山里を巡って視察すると、概ね農業の余暇に繭糸を製造するものであって、その桑林は四方を山岳に囲まれ土質が粘土質で密であるため、高木・高株でなければ繁茂することができない。なぜなら地位が僻地で遠く、肥料や糞の運搬が容易ではないからである。ただ自然の雨露の潤いを仰いで生育するため、根株が数年を経なければ繁茂する力がないことを知るべきである。たまたま根刈桑を見ると、枝葉が枯れて萎れている。これすなわち高木・高株は生糸に良く、河畔のものは卵種に良いとする説の起こる所以である。

勢多郡花輪村および大間々町は生糸の美名がある。これは水流が清く純粋であることから製糸に適し、かつ巧みに平糸を製造するからである。山田郡桐生にて織り成した純白の琥珀龍門綾織は花輪・大間々の白繭糸を必要とする。《この地および隣村において高木・高株の培養が最も他の地方に優る》蓋し花輪・大間々の人民は単に土産のみならず、他の産繭を買って糸を製造する。生糸の精粗は一つには丁寧に製造することと、一つには水の性質にあることを知るべきである。
