一 これまでの養蚕に関する書物は牛に汗をかかせ、棟に充満するほど
多数あるが、その書物の多くは、その事業を行う者が自家の養蚕を
誇張して述べたものである。しかもそれを編集する際には、ただ想像
や推測に任せており、甚だしい場合には文字や文句にこだわって事実
を見失っている。このため、甲は正しく乙は間違いだと、紛々として
議論が入り乱れ、未だに一定の確実な説を得ることができない。そこ
で、この書では従来の諸説を一掃し、遠く捨て去って、直接養蚕の本場
に赴き、親しく見て熟慮観察し、その事を実験して、その奥義を開陳する。
まさに養蚕の真理を尽くしてその秘伝を発見し、また以って古来の
諸々の案を

一 我が国の養蚕の盛んなこと、近年最も増加しており、全国に
既にその事業がある。これを二十年前と比較すれば、概ね
五分の三を加える増加である。しかし、その名産地に至っては、依然として
岩代《割書：伊達郡｜信夫郡》、羽前《割書：米沢｜》、信濃《割書：上田｜》、上野《割書：島村｜》の数カ所
に過ぎない。思うに、その土地の適性と人の努力によるものである
ろう。そして、この書が上野《割書：島村｜》に取材した理由は、
製種の方法において最も新しい見解の妙理があるから
である。その詳細については本編で説明するので、ここでは
繰り返さない。

1. Previous books on sericulture are so numerous they would make oxen sweat
and fill up entire buildings, but most of these books were written by
practitioners boastfully exaggerating their own sericulture methods.
Moreover, when compiling them, they relied solely on imagination and
speculation, and in extreme cases, became so fixated on words and phrases
that they lost sight of the facts. For this reason, with claims that A is
correct and B is wrong, arguments are confused and chaotic, and no definitive
reliable theory has yet been established. Therefore, this book sweeps away
all previous theories, discards them entirely, goes directly to the actual
sites of sericulture, observes closely and carefully examines, experiments
with the practice, and expounds its mysteries. It should truly exhaust the
principles of sericulture to discover its secrets, and thereby provide
sufficient basis for

1. The prosperity of sericulture in our country has increased most remarkably
in recent times, with the industry now established throughout the nation.
Compared to twenty years ago, it has increased by approximately three-fifths.
However, the famous production areas are still limited to just a few locations:
Iwashiro (Date and Shinobu counties), Uzen (Yonezawa), Shinano (Ueda),
and Kōzuke (Shimamura). This is presumably due to the suitability of the
land and the diligence of the people. The reason this book draws its material
from Kōzuke (Shimamura) is because it has the most innovative and sophisticated
principles in seed production methods. The details will be explained in the
main text, so I will not repeat them here.
