**Kitokuyu (鬼督郵)** — *Ghost Supervisor* plant Japanese name: Otowo (ヲトヲ) Alternate name: Dokuyōsō (独揺草, "Self-swaying grass") Additional Japanese name: Toshi (土志) Produced in the mountains of Ōji, Musashi Province. (Colloquial name: Wōji Hakuma [White Bear of Ōji]) --- It grows on a single stem, with leaves gathered at its tip, and sways of its own accord even without wind. For this reason it is named "Dokuyō" (self-swaying). Dokkatsu (独活, *udo*) shares this name but is a different plant. The three plants — Kitokuyu, Jochōkei (徐長卿, *Cynanchum paniculatum*), and Sekisen (赤箭, *Gastrodia elata*) — all cure diseases caused by demons (oni), and therefore all share the name containing "鬼" (ghost/demon). --- The Kitokuyu resembles Kyūi (及已) in the form of its root and plant body. Both the roots and seedlings of the two plants look alike, but: those whose roots resemble Saishin (細辛, *Asarum*) and are yellow-white in color are classified as Kitokuyu, while those that are black in color are classified as Kyūi. --- As recorded in *Bukō Sanbutsu-shi* (武江産物志, "Record of Products of Edo"): One variety of Kitokuyu exists. --- I (the author) note: There is yet another separate variety of Kitokuyu. Because its leaves resemble those of the maple (蝦手, *kaede*), it is called "Kaede-Kitokuyu" (Maple-leaf Ghost Supervisor). This has been recorded in the previous entry. There are several varieties of Kitokuyu, each called by the name of the place where it grows. --- *Recorded from life in the garden on the eighth day of the Hitsuji [未] hour, in the ninth month (Musha/無射), in the Year of the Ox (丑年).*
