和名抄爾雅注曰
芡 ミツフキ ミツフヽキ 一名鶏頭草 其実如鳥ノ頭故名
大和本草
芡実《割書：ミツフキ｜オニバス》 其実苞ノ形雞【＝鶏】ノ頭ノ如シ故ニ鶏頭実ト云
芡葉ハ蓮ニ似テ大ニ而水上ニ浮ミ皺文アリ刺アリ
葉ハ花開ク時多ク生セズ実苞アリテ包メリ其
内実数十顆アリ食フテ甘美ナリト云薬トス
茎ノ中穴アリ糸ヲ出ス根ハ芋ノ如シ

鶏頭根（ミツフキ。国の俗称では「鬼蓮（オニバス）」ともいう）
乙未年・南呂（旧暦八月）、倉橋氏より送られてきたものを十二日に実写す
『和名抄』・『爾雅注』に曰く：
芡（ミツフキ・ミツフヽキ）、一名「鶏頭草」。その実が鳥の頭に似ているゆえにこの名がある。
『大和本草』：
芡実（ミツフキ・オニバス） その実の苞の形が鶏の頭のようであるゆえに「鶏頭実」という。
芡の葉は蓮に似て大きく、水面に浮かんでおり、しわのある葉脈があり、刺がある。
葉は花が開く時にはあまり多く生えていない。実の苞があってその中に包まれており、
中に実が数十粒ある。食べると甘くおいしいといわれ、薬としても用いる。
茎の中には空洞があり、糸（繊維）を取り出すことができる。根は芋のようである。

Sketched from life on the 12th day of Nanryō (the 8th lunar month) of the year Kinoto-Hitsuji (1835), from a specimen sent by Mr. Kurahashi.
From "Wamyōshō" and the "Erya Commentary":
Qiàn (Mitsufuki / Mitsufuhuki), also known as "Jītóucǎo" [Chicken-head Grass]. It is so named because its fruit resembles the head of a bird.
From "Yamato Honzō" [Japanese Materia Medica]:
Qiànshí [Euryale seed] (Mitsufuki / Onibasu) The shape of the bract encasing the fruit resembles a chicken's head, and it is therefore called "Jītóushí" [Chicken-head Fruit].
The leaves of Euryale resemble those of the lotus but are larger, floating on the water's surface, with wrinkled veining and spines.
The leaves do not grow in great abundance when the flowers are in bloom. The fruit is enclosed within a bract,
and inside there are several dozen seeds. It is said to be sweet and delicious when eaten, and is also used as medicine.
The stem is hollow inside and yields fibers. The root is like a taro.
