『和漢三才図会』に、紫陽花の一種として白花のものがあると記されている。茎・葉は（紫のものと）同じで、五月に開花する。その形は大いに異なり、純白色の五弁の小花が数多く集まって咲く。俗にこれを「真の紫陽花」と呼ぶ。〔未見：著者自身はまだ見ていない〕
紫陽花といえば紫色のものを本物と見なす時には、白色のものを別の一種とする。この説は（著者には）正しいとは思われない〔府合せず〕。しかしながら、世間では（この白花のものを）通称「唐紫陽花」と呼んでおり、（紫のものと）混同されている。

In the *Wakan Sansai Zue* (和漢三才図会), it is noted that there is a white-flowered variety of *shiyōka* (hydrangea). Its stem and leaves are the same as the common type, and it blooms in the 5th month. Its form is quite different: small five-petaled flowers of pure white gather together in clusters. It is popularly called "the true *shiyōka*." [Note: *Miken* — the author has not personally observed this variety.]
When purple-flowered hydrangeas are regarded as the authentic variety, the white-flowered one is treated as a separate species. This view does not seem correct [*fukōse*, i.e., does not accord with reason] to the author. Nevertheless, common usage refers to (this white-flowered variety) by the popular name *Tō-ajisai*, causing it to be conflated with the purple variety.
