痘瘡や麻疹の類は目に見える形もあり匂いもあって分かりやすい悪い病気である。これに汚染されて伝染し、命を失い身体障害者となる。その俗習は到底言葉では表現しがたい。試しに世の盲人に尋ねてみれば、十人中八、九人は痘瘡で目を潰した盲目である。昔この病気が起こってから今に至るまで天下の人を害することは、計算の数にも名付けがたい。非命と言おうか非業と言おうか。まして今より後、無量世の人を害するに至っては、悲しむのもなお余りある。世の中でそれとは知らず、一生に一度の厄を払うとして、この病気の伝染することを喜び願うのは何事であろうか。土地の俗習で、ことごとしく神棚を飾り、絹布を引き回し、互いに贈り物をする費用は言うまでもなく大変なものである。その中で不学文盲の藪医者は、痘瘡の毒気をどのようなものとも理解せず、わずか一巻二巻の医書を持ち、指を折り首を伸ばして流行の遅いのを待ちわびて、すでにこの病気が近づき蔓延すれば、時を得たと痛み喜び、自分の利欲を先にして人の非命に死ぬるのを露ほども

Such customs are truly beyond description in words. If you try asking blind people in the world, eight or nine out of ten are blind because smallpox destroyed their eyes. Since this disease first arose in ancient times until now, the harm it has caused to people under heaven is beyond numerical calculation. Should we call it an unnatural death or an untimely demise? Moreover, when it comes to harming countless people in immeasurable future generations, grief is still insufficient. In the world, people unknowingly rejoice and wish for the transmission of this disease, thinking they are dispelling a once-in-a-lifetime calamity—what manner of thing is this? According to local customs, they elaborately decorate god shelves, hang silk cloth everywhere, and the expense of exchanging gifts with each other is, needless to say, tremendous. Among them, ignorant and illiterate quack doctors do not understand what the poisonous qi of smallpox truly is. They do not mourn at all, saying casually that it is heaven's mandate, the way of the world, making this malignant disease their livelihood's blessing—is this not detestable?
