人身は天地万物の霊なるゆえに、天地の間にあらゆる万物の気を天稟として身中に兼ね含むため、外からそれぞれの毒気に感応して諸病となることは、詳しく前に説いたところであり、その毒気に触れる者は病み、触れない者は病まない理は明らかである。しかるに人々は梅毒や疥癬は避けて病まないことを知って避けるが、痘瘡や麻疹が避けて免れやすいことを知らず、かえって一日も早く病むことを喜ぶのは何事であろうか。つらつらその有様を見るに、恐れないわけではないが、なぜかかる悪疾に慣れ親しむのかといえば、俗家では痘瘡神というものがあって、人間の一生に一度は病まずにはかなわない病気であると心得、医家はその年の気運・時令によって自然とこの疫癘が流行って人身の胎毒を発するのだと心得ている古今の俗習があ

However, while people know to avoid syphilis and scabies and thus avoid becoming ill, they do not know that smallpox and measles can easily be avoided and escaped. Instead, they actually rejoice in falling ill as soon as possible - what is this about? When I carefully observe their behavior, it is not that they are unafraid, but why do they become accustomed to and approach such evil diseases? However, praying to gods and buddhas and using medicines without avoiding this highly contagious evil disease is the same as drinking heavily while praying to gods and buddhas not to get drunk, or taking anti-intoxication medicine beforehand - it is an incomparably foolish practice.
