ではないだろうか。ただ痘瘡は悪毒で猛烈であり、伝染しやすい病気なので、それを避ければ病まないことを知って、独身者は場所を変え宿を変えて逃れることもできるが、主君に仕え、親に仕え、妻子や親族を養う者は避けて逃れることができると分かっていても、どれほど心苦しく思っても仕方がない。まして貧者の世渡りは衣食住の心配が病気よりも急務なので、これを打ち捨てて痘瘡や麻疹を避けることは難しい。これらは皆世の中の俗習に引かれて、やむを得ず病むまじき病気を患い、死ぬまじき命を死なせるのである。
何事も俗習となってはやむを得ないものであって、越後国魚沼郡妻有の庄は往古はすべて痘瘡を避けていたが、いつとなく怠って、今はわずかに結東、中子新田、城原新田、百合窪新田、下穴藤、中子本田、清水河原、見玉、野地、所平、大赤坂新田、源内山新田、大場新田、百ノ木新田のみである。これも近頃

は痘瘡を患う者が次第に多くなっている。これを見れば、漸々と避痘の土地はなくなって、後には医書に言うように時気・疫癘と心得て、伝染・毒気ということは万世の後まで知らないようになってしまうのだろうか。悲しむべきことである。
避痘の土地はいずれも俗習となって皆一心に忌避するゆえに、千余年の久しい間、天下一般に流行する悪疾を逃れて身命を全うしている。右のように一村が一心で避ければ一村は病まず、一国が一心で避ければ一国は病まず、海内が一心で避ければ海内は病まない伝染病なので、その土地の広さに従っていよいよ避けやすく、狭ければいよいよ避けがたい。この故に避痘の土地は大抵山中や辺鄙な所である。
しかしながら肥前国大村や周防国岩国は四方みな痘瘡流行の中にある城下であるにもかかわらず、避けて病まないのを見れば、いずれの土地でもこの病気を

However, smallpox is a malignant and virulent disease that spreads easily, so while those who know they can avoid illness by staying away from it—and unmarried people can escape by changing locations and lodgings—those who serve their lords, serve their parents, and support wives, children, and relatives understand that they can avoid and escape it, yet no matter how much anguish they feel, there is nothing they can do. Moreover, for the poor, the struggles of clothing, food, and shelter are more urgent than disease, so abandoning these concerns to avoid smallpox and measles is difficult. All of this results from being drawn into worldly customs, inevitably contracting diseases that should not be contracted and dying deaths that should not occur.
When anything becomes a social custom, it becomes unavoidable. In Tsumari-no-sho in Uonuma District of Echigo Province, in ancient times everyone avoided smallpox, but gradually this practice was neglected, and now only Kettō, Nakago-shinden, Shirohara-shinden, Yurikubo-shinden, Shimo-kettō, Nakago-honden, Shimizu-kawara, Mitama, Noji, Tokoro-daira, Ō-akasaka-shinden, Gen'naiyama-shinden, Ōba-shinden, and Momonoki-shinden remain. have gradually more people contracting smallpox. Seeing this, will the lands that avoid smallpox gradually disappear, and in the future will people understand it as seasonal qi and epidemics as stated in medical books, with the concepts of contagion and toxic qi becoming unknown for ten thousand generations? This is a lamentable matter.
In lands that avoid smallpox, it has become a custom for everyone to shun it with one heart, thus for over a thousand years they have escaped the evil disease that spreads throughout the realm and preserved their lives. As described above, if one village avoids it with one heart, that village will not fall ill; if one country avoids it with one heart, that country will not fall ill; if the entire realm avoids it with one heart, the entire realm will not fall ill from this contagious disease. Therefore, the larger the territory, the easier it becomes to avoid, and the smaller, the more difficult to avoid. For this reason, lands that avoid smallpox are generally in mountainous and remote areas.
However, seeing that Ōmura in Hizen Province and Iwakuni in Suō Province, though castle towns surrounded on all sides by areas where smallpox spreads, avoid it and do not fall ill, shows that in any land this disease can be
