らんか若（もし）疫神（やくじん）を家（いへ）の内（うち）に祭（まつり）て痘瘡（とうさう）の如（ごと）く祭（まつり）さゞめく者（もの）あらば
愚癡（ぐち）といわんか無智（むち）といわんか是（これ）元来（ぐわんらい）痘神（はうさうがみ）を祭事（まつること）は俗情（ぞくじやう）より出（いで）
て俗習（ぞくしふ）となりし事なれば祭（まつり）やうも差別（さべつ）なく祭神（まつるかみ）は何神（なにがみ）といふ
辨（わきまへ）もなく無狀（むしやう）に信仰（しんかう）するばかりにて畢究（ひつきやう）は反（かへつ）て殃（わざはひ）をまねく

ろうか。もし疫神を家の内に祭って痘瘡のように祭り騒ぐ者があれば、愚痴と言おうか無知と言おうか。これは元来、痘神を祭ることは俗情より出て俗習となった事なれば、祭り方も区別なく、祭る神は何の神という弁えもなく、無暗に信仰するばかりで、結局は反って災いを招く元である。これすなわち、祭り方と祭る心とは食い違って区別なしという理屈ではないか。この理を人ごとに弁え知って、まず痘神を祭ることを止めるならば、痘瘡も軽く、非命に死する人も少なく、家々の費用もなく、誠に一つの大国益である。いずれの土地でも痘神を祭り騒ぐ風俗ならば、その村里の長たる人は、害になって益なき理を懇ろに教訓して速やかに停止すべきことである。世間の人がこぞって痘神というものありて病むと思うのは、他の病症

Seeing this, people have developed the folk custom of single-mindedly believing that since deities abhor impurity, the smallpox deity's anger brings curses upon patients. Not only common households but even medical families, seeing that changes occur in smallpox when exposed to defiled qi and foul odors, think it is a disease that abhors and dislikes defiled qi—this is a grave error. Smallpox is not a disease that hates defilement and impurity; it is a disease that extremely favors defilement and impurity. I shall explain this principle in detail below.
