気不浄を嫌うのではなく、甚だしく悪臭の匂いを好むのである。この時はやく芬々たる馨香を焚いてその病者に嗅がせ、服薬にも香気の薬品を加えて用いれば、その変症を救うのである。痘瘡は穢毒の病であるゆえに悪臭の気を好み、人の正気は清潔なるものなれば悪臭の気を憎む。これすなわち臭気と香気とが相反するのも、正気と毒気とが相戦うのも、皆天地自然の明理であり疑うべからず。なぜ悪毒臭気の痘瘡が穢気不浄を憎んで内に引く理屈があろうか。
痘瘡は穢気を嫌うゆえに内へ引くぞと思う世人の心得とは実に黒白の差である。まして痘神が不浄を嫌うゆえなりと思うのは弁えなき事である。右に弁ずるごとく穢気不浄を好むほどの悪疾なれば、追い払いこそすべきであって、祭って慶び騒ぐべき事ではない。もし全快の慶事を行えば日数を

貴人が痘瘡・麻疹を避けやすい弁
痘瘡・麻疹は梅毒・疥癬に変わることなき伝染病であるのは、目前に避けて病まざる土地数多ありて疑いなき病であれば、下々の賤しき者の貧しく忙しい世渡りにも、一命にかかる大事ぞと心得て避けさえすれば、生涯逃れやすき病である。まして一郡一国を領し給う御方として痘瘡・麻疹を病み給う事は決してあるまじき事である。つらつら思うに高貴の御方としてかかる悪病を避け給わぬ事はあるまじきなれども、間々痘瘡・麻疹に犯され給う御方のあるは、必ず防御方の厳重でないことによって、人知らず毒気に染

At this time, if one quickly burns fragrant aromatics for the patient to smell, and adds aromatic medicinal substances to the medications, this will cure the complications. Because smallpox is a disease of defiled toxins, it favors foul-smelling qi, while human vital qi, being pure and clean, detests foul-smelling qi. This principle - that odors and fragrances oppose each other, and vital qi and toxic qi fight each other - is all according to the clear principle of heaven and earth's nature and should not be doubted. Why would there be any reason for smallpox, being evil toxic and foul-smelling, to hate defiled qi and impurity and withdraw inward?
The common understanding that smallpox withdraws inward because it dislikes defiled qi is truly as different as black and white. Moreover, thinking that this is because the smallpox deity dislikes impurity is a matter of poor judgment. As explained above, since it is such an evil disease that favors defiled qi and impurity, one should drive it away rather than worship it and celebrate with rejoicing. passed, when the scabs have fallen off, the body has become pure and clean, and there is no risk of contagion to others, then one may celebrate and rejoice as much as one wishes.
On How Noble Persons Can Easily Avoid Smallpox and Measles
Smallpox and measles are contagious diseases no different from syphilis and scabies. Since there are many lands visible before our eyes where people avoid these diseases and do not fall ill, these are undoubtedly [preventable] diseases. Even among the lowly and poor who lead busy and impoverished lives, if they understand this as a great matter affecting their very lives and simply avoid [exposure], these are diseases easily escaped throughout one's lifetime. How much more so for those noble persons who govern counties and provinces - they should never fall ill with smallpox and measles. Upon careful reflection, while it should be impossible for noble persons not to avoid such evil diseases, when noble persons are occasionally afflicted with smallpox and measles, it is necessarily because their protective measures are not strict enough, and they unknowingly become infected with the toxic qi.
