他に類を見ない病気もない悪毒である。
一 痘瘡を避けるにあたって、まず専一の覚悟は、幼少の時に避けても大人
になって病気になるのは危険である。小児の時には死んでも悲しみが少ない
と思う考えを完全にやめて、病気になることを好むべきではない。これは世上の人々
誰もが思うところであるが、非常に情けないことで、この迷いがあるために
世間の人々は皆痘瘡の伝染を願い望んでいる。前編に詳しく
論じたように、痘瘡の重い軽いは天賦の性質によるもので、大
人と小児の差別によるものではない。例えば非常に重い痘瘡を
患って死ぬべき性質の命であっても、一度の流行を逃れれば再び

流行するまでの年数を生き延び、二度の流行を避ければ二度分の
年数を長生きし、さらには九度十度の流行を防ぐときは七十年来
の齢を保つ目前の美事である。流行する度ごとに避けるのは心苦しいこと
のようであるが、都市部も地方も大抵三四ヶ月では近隣の流行は
静まるものであるから、この防御が遂げられないことはあってはならない。心に
かけて防いでも自分の知らないうちに伝染するのは仕方がない。早く病気になって
安心しようと思う親の身にとっては、その子の生死を試すにあたって
類もない無慈悲なことである。その子の身にとっては実に
生死の境で、痛ましく憐れむべきことではないか。繰り返すが、幼少の
時には死んでもよいと思うのは人情にあるまじきことである。

One In avoiding smallpox, the first and most important resolution is that even if one avoids it in childhood, becoming ill as an adult is dangerous. The idea that there is less sorrow if a child dies should be completely abandoned, and one should not favor becoming ill. This is what everyone in society thinks, but it is extremely heartless, and because of this delusion, people in the world universally wish for and hope for smallpox transmission. As discussed in detail in the previous volume, the severity or mildness of smallpox depends on one's innate constitution and is not based on the difference between adults and children. For example, even a life with the constitution to suffer severe smallpox and die, if it escapes one epidemic, will again

survive the years until the next epidemic, and if it avoids two epidemics, it will live long for two periods of years. Furthermore, when one prevents nine or ten epidemics, one preserves a lifespan of seventy years - this is a beautiful thing before one's eyes. Although avoiding each epidemic may seem distressing, both in cities and countryside, epidemics in the vicinity usually subside within about three to four months, so there should be no reason why this prevention cannot be accomplished. Even if one is mindful and takes precautions but unknowingly contracts the infection, it cannot be helped. For parents who think they should let their child become ill early to gain peace of mind, when it comes to testing their child's life and death, this is incomparably merciless. For the child, it is truly a matter of life and death - is this not painful and pitiable? I repeat, thinking that it is acceptable for a child to die in childhood is contrary to human nature.
