次宿（ししゆく）すべからず休息（きうそく）するにも其 心得（こゝろゑ）肝要（かんゑう）なり必（かならず）晝飯（ひるめし）
を齎（もち）て猥（みだり）に沽食（かいぐひ）をすべからず貴人（きにん）は痘瘡病（とうさうやみ）の衣類（いるい）すべ
て病人（びやうにん）に屬（つき）たる物（もの）ともに他家（たけ）へ移（うつ）させて次宿（しきゆく）し給へば傳染（でんせん）
する事（こと）なし痘瘡（とうさう）は傳染（でんせん）して次第（しだい）にめぐるやまひなれば
数十里（すじふり）の路次（ろし）に流行（りうかう）する事（こと）なし纔（わつか）一日程（いちにちゞ）二日程（ふつかぢ）には流行（りうかう）

特に愚かな人は、あの痘瘡神に重く病気にさせる神と軽く病気にさせる神があると心得て、軽い痘瘡病の家へその子を連れて行って撫でさせたりする者がある。しかし、これは燃え盛る火に近づくよりも危険である。決してしてはならないことである。
一 旅行の道中で痘瘡の流行があれば、痘瘡病のある宿屋には宿泊すべきでない。休息するにもその心得が肝要である。必ず昼食を持参して、むやみに外で食べ物を買って食べてはならない。身分の高い人は痘瘡病人の衣類すべて、病人に関わった物とともに他の家へ移させて宿泊すれば、感染することはない。痘瘡は感染して次第に広がる病気であるから、数十里の道のりに流行することはない。わずか一日程、二日程には流行の街道を通り過ぎるために、旅中での予防法はかえって家にいる時より非常に容易なことである。

一 途中で痘瘡病に遭遇する時は、その匂いを嗅がないようにすべきである。目で見ただけで感染するものではない。その時は水で鼻の穴を濡らすべきである。水の清潔さが痘毒の穢れを避けることは素晴らしい効果がある。水がない時は唾で鼻の穴を濡らすべきである。鼻に涼しい気が感じられる間は痘毒の熱気を防ぐのである。唾は人体の清らかな液体であるために、味もなく濁りもなく、天地の雨露と同じである。試しに悪臭に向かって唾で鼻の穴を濡らしてみるべきである。たちまちその悪臭を感じなくなる。これすなわち痘毒の穢れた気も避ける証拠である。

At such times, you should moisten your nostrils with water. The cleanliness of water has a wonderful effect in avoiding the defilement of smallpox poison. When there is no water, you should moisten your nostrils with saliva. As long as you feel coolness in your nose, it prevents the heat of smallpox poison. Since saliva is the pure liquid of the human body, it has no taste or cloudiness and is no different from the rain and dew of heaven and earth. Try moistening your nostrils with saliva when facing bad odors. You will immediately stop sensing that bad odor. This is proof that it also avoids the defiled air of smallpox poison.
