生路を得る者も、また時として身を毀し明を損なう。これは利がその害に勝てず、益がその損に勝てないことが分かる。ある人が言うには、「痘瘡・麻疹は流行病である。避けようとしても避けることができない」と。また言うには、「痘瘡は種のようなものである」と。これはおそらく戦国時代の遊説家の説に従ったものであろう。その中で「努めてこれを避ければ終身の安全を保つことができる」と言う者は、孟子・思想家の道であろうか、そうでないだろうか。遭遇することには時があるといっても、危険な道に頼らなければ、害がその道理となることはない。
