--- **【Vegetable/Herb Category】** **Shōga-shika (蘘荷子花) — Flower of the Myōga Ginger Fruit** [Mega-no-ko-no-hana] ※ "茗荷 (Myōga)" is the currently common written form. According to the *Wakan Sansai Zue* (和漢三才図会), in the section on "Moist Herbs" (湿草類): Myōga (蘘荷) [Tang Chinese pronunciation: Jiāng Hé] — Alternate names: Fukuzo, Hakusho, Jōsō, Fukusho, Kisō. The Japanese name is "mika (米加)." Writing it as "茗荷" is not the original character. "茗 (mei)" simply means tea. Myōga is commonly called "茗荷" in popular usage. It bears a slight resemblance to bamboo and its shoots, and because it resembles bamboo shoots (*ko*), it is called "Myōga-no-ko" (名荷笋). In *Shokukyō* (食競), Li Shizhen states: "Myōga (蘘荷)" refers to the root, while "Jōsō (蘘草)" refers to the leaves, and so forth. Regarding the clustered flowers of the myōga fruit (*myōgashi-gunka*): I (Baien) previously painted this, intending to depict the plant with soil removed. According to the *Wamyō Ruijushō* (和名類聚抄): "Myōga (蘘荷)": According to Ma Yuan's *Shokukyō* (食経), the name is "Myōga" [pronounced as 穰何], and the Japanese name is "mika (米加)." The *Kenmyōen* (兼名苑) states: one alternate name is "■苴 [two pronunciations: fuku and sha]." The *Tōin* (唐韻) states: "蒪 (ku) sha [upper tone, kasu]," which is the name for *Dai-myōga* (大蘘荷, large myōga). Copied on the eighth day of the latter period of the Sanpuku (三伏, the hottest days), in the month of Rinshō (林鐘, sixth lunar month), in the year Kisubi (癸未, 1823). --- **Konotegashiwa (側柏, Oriental Arborvitae)** [Alternate name] Kiku (椈) — Source: *Honzō* (本草) According to the *Jikinsho* (地錦抄): Flowers on both faces. **【Tree Category】** The leaves of this tree grow densely as though two hands are pressed together (*te wo awaseta*), and for this reason it is called "Konotegashiwa" (木の手柏, "hand-leaf cypress"). The "Sokuhaku (側柏)" is said to refer to the common cypress — whether this is the same or a different plant from Konotegashiwa requires further investigation. What is illustrated here has the dense foliage omitted for the purpose of making the form of the flowers easier to see; please bear this in mind when viewing. Copied on the fifth day of the middle period of early summer (初夏中), in the year of the Monkey (申年). --- **[Addendum on Konotegashiwa]** According to the *Honzō Wage* (本草和解): **Qilin Jie (騏驎竭, Dragon's Blood Resin)** — Works well in combination with Mitsudassō (蜜陀僧, litharge). [Alternate name] Ketsuketsu (血竭) [Japanese name] Akayani (安可夜尓) ○ In Japan, it is mistakenly said to be the blood of a grey-dappled horse. In fact, it is the resin (*nikawa*) of a tree called the "blood tree (血樹)." Its fragrance resembles that of the gardenia (*kuchinashi*), and its color is like blood. The genuine article is that which, when burned, produces red sap that wells up and eventually returns to its original color after some time. Anything with a salty taste and a raw, fishy smell is "sea-creature blood (海母血, *kaiboketsu*)" — though it closely resembles the real thing, it must not be used. There are several grades available as medicinal supplements; the one called "chimaki-te" is considered the finest. It is called "chimaki-te" because it is kneaded, hardened, and wrapped in grass leaves (like a *chimaki* rice dumpling). It is difficult to distinguish genuine from imitation, and so forth. ○ Reflecting on this myself (Baien, *Genju*): Although the blood-tree (*ketsuketsu-ju*) appears in various texts, none of them describe the form or appearance of the tree — it is only listed among aromatic substances. Here, one Yōkei of Toyoda in Bōshū (Suō Province) [present-day Yamaguchi Prefecture], inspired by the scholarly spirit of Master Matsuoka Jōan (松岡恕庵), authored a single volume called *Shabenbeyoroku* (赭鞭余録). In that volume, he cites the Qilin blood-tree and notes that Master Matsuoka suggested it may be the *Konotegashiwa*. However, he added that the place from which the resin exudes has not yet been tested. I, too, have merely appended my name to the afterword of that theory; the question remains unresolved.
