## On the Azusa Tree (梓, *Catalpa*)
**As stated in the *Yamato Honzō* (Great Japanese Materia Medica):**
The flower of the *azusa* (梓) tree — one name: "kawarahisaki"
Another name: "Wood King" (木王, *mokuō*)
In common parlance also called "ki-sasage"
Also known as "Raijin-boku" (Tree of the Thunder God)
---
**As stated in the *Wamyō Ruijushō* (Japanese Name Lexicon):**
Regarding *azusa*: In Sun Mian's *Qieyun* (Dictionary of Rhymes), it states: "*Zi* (梓) — pronunciation: *zi*; Japanese name: *Azusa* (阿豆佐)."
It is a tree name, belonging to the genus of *hisagi* (楸, *Catalpa*).
[Wood category]
(Copied faithfully on the 24th day of the month of Zuihin [5th month] in the year Kinoe-saru [
---
**As stated in Lu Dian's *Piya* (埤雅, Supplement to the Erya):**
The *zi* (梓) tree is called the "King of Trees."
Indeed, there is no tree finer than the *azusa*. As Luo Yuan states: "If a house contains this tree, the other timbers will not be struck by lightning."
This is why *azusa* is called the "King of Trees." The character *zhen* (震) here means "lightning strike."
In Japanese folk belief, the *azusa* tree repels lightning, and it is said that lightning will not strike a residence that has an *azusa* tree.
---
**As stated in the *Wakan Sansai Zue* (Illustrated Encyclopedia of Japan and China), section on shrubs and trees:**
*Zi* (梓) (pronunciation: *zi*; Chinese pronunciation: *tsū*) — Wood King
The fruit is named "Yocao" (豫草)
The alternate name of camphor (*nan*) is also called "Yocao,"
sharing the same name as this tree.
Japanese name: *Azusa* (阿豆佐)
There are three varieties of *azusa*. The one with white wood grain is called *zi* (梓); the red-grained one is called *qiu* (楸); the one with beautiful grain is called *yi* (椅); and the small variety is called *e* (榎, hackberry).
○ In ancient times, this wood was carved to make printing blocks. Hence the terms *xiùzǐ* (繍梓) and *qièzǐ* (鍥梓) exist as names for woodblock printing. In Japan, cherry wood is most commonly used for printing blocks.
---
**As stated in the *Honzō Ikkagen* (Personal Views on Materia Medica):**
*Azusa* — *Azusa* (阿都佐), also called *Akamekashiwa* (阿加米加之和)
Or called *Misaiha* (御菜葉), or *Mishizuha* (御志都葉)
Also called *Chōshigi* (銚子木), or *Ki-sasage* (木豇豆)
Also called *Raiden-giri* (雷電桐) and *Mokuō* (木王, Wood King)
