**[Right Folio]** *(Continuing from the previous page)* "…and [the details] are fully written out therein, etc." In a previous year, when Nakai Mondo came to conduct an inspection, [I] showed him [the documents] at the Sawada worship hall (haiden), whereupon Mondo praised [them], saying: "Truly, these are secret documents handed down within the household of the shrine's chief master carpenter (shō-daiku), and are matters of the utmost importance to this shrine, etc." Regarding this [current] reconstruction, the detailed arrangements designating the chief master carpenter (shō-daiku) as the overall master builder (sō-tōryō) for all matters proved ineffective, and it became the shrine priest's ruling that [the chief carpenter] should share authority over labor and construction fees on equal footing with the general master carpenters (sō-daiku). Furthermore, after [the chief carpenter] protested and lamented [this arrangement], it was settled that the chief master carpenter would undertake construction of half of both the Main Shrine (shōden) and the Temporary Shrine (gonsha), etc. Saemon further said: "Regarding the shrine construction of the Kōji and Tenshō eras, **[Annotation in red ink:]** *The Wamyōshō* says: "tsuka-bashira" (束柱, pillar/post). The *Kōteishiki* says: "tsuka-bashira" — [phonetic rendering:] tsu-ka-ha-shi-ra. "Sasu" (杈), "head/capital" (首). Yang's *Kangoshō* says: "sasu" (杈首) — sa-su. The phonetic reading of 杈 (sasu) is the fanqie of shō-ga (初牙反). [This construction] is of the tsuka-tate (束立て, post-and-pillar) style. There is an investigation indicating that the current [rebuilding] employs the sasu-tate (叉首立て, rafter-frame/scissor-truss) style. In the Kan'ei reconstruction, the current shrine is called the sasu-tate, uchi-dai-zukuri (inner platform construction). This style of construction is the same as that of the Shishinden (Ceremonial Hall) of the Imperial Palace (kinri), etc. Whether this same [inner platform] construction was used prior to the Tenshō era is unknown, as there is no documentary evidence. **[Left Folio]** Why was [the shrine] built in the uchi-dai (inner platform) style during the Kan'ei [reconstruction]? The Kan'ei [reconstruction] was carried out during the reign of Lord Daitoku-in (Tokugawa Hidetada), and all matters were constructed with great care and thoroughness. The constructions of the Kōji and Tenshō eras were simplified. Therefore, it was decided that [the shrine] should be built in the same manner as the Kan'ei reconstruction, etc. Although [the chief carpenter Saemon] objected, saying it should perhaps follow the Tenshō style, it was again decided that the Kan'ei precedent should be followed, etc. The shrine priest (kannagi/kannushi) then said: "Comparing the current inner sanctum (naijin) floor planking with the great floor (ōyuka) of the outer sanctuary (gejin), the inner sanctum is five sun lower [than the outer floor]. This too may be an old tradition of the shrine. However, for this reconstruction, there is a proposal that the inner floor planking should be made at the same level (equal in height) as the outer great floor — and is this not perhaps an unprecedented change (shinji)?, etc." Since the height [of the structure] does not permit the installation of the sacred beach floor (o-hama-yuka), it has been determined that the ceiling should be raised accordingly to match that height, etc. [I, Suetsū,] stated: "It should be constructed according to established custom (arikitari). Because from ancient times the [inner sanctum floor] has been lower than the outer sanctuary great floor, when one currently enters the inner sanctum, one descends…" *(text continues on the following page)*
