**[Right Folio]**
*(Continuing from the previous page)* "…[this is] the foremost oral tradition exclusively [of this shrine], etc."
Kiyoshige states: "The matter of there being a *kushi-do* (櫛戸) at Kibune Shrine is something entirely unprecedented. Even the household of the Chief Carpenter (shō-daiku) has no such transmission, and accordingly, the shrine buildings of the Enpō and Shōtoku eras do not have one, etc. This is not to be taken on trust. The East and West two shrines of the Main Kamo Shrine (Kamo Honmiya), as well as Kawai Shrine (河合御殿) and others, all have *o-kiri-to* (御切戸, inner passage doors), but whether a *kushi-do* exists among them is unknown. This matter should be inquired into."
---
*One entry:* In the imperial diary (*shinsoki*) of [Retired Emperor] Hanazono, dated the First Day of the Ninth Month of Shōwa 2 [1313]:
"Today, Taira no Chūnagon Tsunechika, in the course of casual conversation, reported the following: By the command of Retired Emperor Gofukakusa, [the Emperor] had placed an imperial chair (*gyoishi*) against the door in the *Tenjō* (殿上, Courtiers' Hall) of Kan'in Palace and was seated there; when he looked up at the ceiling above, there was a square hole (*hōketsu*) which appeared, as if melted open [i.e., indistinctly formed], etc. Hearing of this, [Hanazono] consulted with a craftsman (*takumi*) about the matter, [and the craftsman replied] that such a hole should exist there without any special construction being required, etc.
**[Left Folio]**
In the manner of construction between the Seiryōden (清涼殿, Cool Chamber) and the Tenjō (殿上, Courtiers' Hall), it is natural that such a hole would exist, etc. It is indeed the name of something deeply esoteric. In the lower door (*shita-do*) as well, such a hole should similarly exist, etc. This was conveyed in the course of a discussion about the construction of the Imperial Palace."
Furthermore, Lord Sukesue [the late Nijō Dainagon-nyūdō] related: "Concerning the object called the 'pillar-sack' (*hashira no fukuro*), though I had heard the name, I had never seen the actual thing — and then, unexpectedly, I came across it in a picture, etc. I found it most fascinating, etc. Recording such things may seem to serve little purpose, yet as they are somehow engaging, I record them here for future reference."
Kiyoshige records: "This is the diary written in the hand of Retired Emperor Hanazono, transmitted through the Fushimi-no-Miya (伏見宮) lineage. Recently, I was granted a *ryōji* (令旨, a prince's command) and had the privilege of viewing it, whereupon this particular passage of the record…"
**[In red ink]:**
I [Kiyoshige] note: [I have] appended [this] together with one fascicle of the Tsuneie household.
▽ Since this record-text is in accord with the meaning of the *kiri-to* and *kushi-do* of our shrine, I have extracted it here. It is truly a blessing of learning (*keiko no myōga*), something to be cherished and kept secret with incomparable care.
*Right [column]:* Regarding the upper and lower door-openings (戸口) of the inner sanctuary of this shrine, [handed down through] the orthodox transmission of the ancient elders of our clan…
**[In red ink — separate hand, a scholarly note (*anmon*)]:**
Furthermore, I note: "*Kushimi-to*" (櫛御戸) is alternatively written as "*Kushi* (奇, wondrous) *-mi* (御, honorific) *-to* (戸, door)." In the *Jindai-no-maki* (神代巻, Age of the Gods chapter [of the *Nihon Shoki*]), it is written as meaning "a wondrous and awe-inspiring (*kushihi ni ayashiki*) sacred door (*kumi-do*)." As for the reading "*kushihi*," there is a secret oral transmission (*kōju*) of its esoteric reading.
