Document on the Origins of the Enshrinement of Kamo Grand Shrine (Kamo Kōdaijingū)
The Kamo Grand Shrine is a sacred shrine that protects all under heaven, radiating its divine majesty in all four directions and bestowing its benevolent influence upon all nations — a most venerable deity. In particular, as the chief shrine (ichinomiya) of this province, it has received the highest reverence of the Imperial Court since ancient times, and the strictness with which its rites have been conducted, unmixed with those of other shrines, is clearly attested in the national histories, the Ryō no Gige, the Engishiki, and various other old records of notable families, though we shall not enumerate these one by one.
Regarding the enshrinement itself: the date is so ancient and remote that its transmitted accounts cannot be given in full detail. As for the construction and repair of the shrine buildings, the Kamo Shrine was first constructed in the seventh year of Emperor Sujin's reign.
[Left folio]
During the Hakuhō era of Emperor Tenmu's reign, the Kamo Shrine was rebuilt, and it is transmitted that at this time the thatched roof (kayabuki) was replaced with a cypress-bark roof (hiwadabuki). Thereafter, successive generations of emperors undertook construction of the shrine. Most notably, on the thirteenth day of the Fourth Month in the ninth year of Chōgen (1036) during the reign of Emperor Go-Ichijō, an imperial edict was issued establishing a cycle of shrine reconstruction equivalent to that of the Ise Grand Shrine, designating twenty-one years as the shikinen (regular reconstruction) interval. The dates of subsequent generations of construction and repairs will be omitted here.
Regarding the shrine festivals: during the reign of the Emperor who resided at the Shikinoizagaki Palace (磯城瑞籬宮), in order to pray for peace throughout the realm and abundant harvests of the five grains, an auspicious day in the Fourth Month was chosen, horses were adorned with bells and ornamental trappings, and sacred music (kagura) and Azuma-asobi performances were offered. According to shrine tradition, this is what the world refers to as the origin of the festival (matsuri). As for the origin of the Extraordinary Festival (rinji-sai)...
