一、文化三（寅）年十二月、足軽・御長柄の者たちが御堀浚い（お堀の浚渫）の総出の節に出勤し、自ら働いた。寒い時期に泥の中での作業は格別に辛労なことであったところ、踏み込んで精を出し、果敢に取り組んだことにより、お酒を下し置かれた件。
一、同四（卯）年五月、跡式御知行千石を相違なく下し置かれ、御家老附外様士を仰せ付けられた。芸術（武芸・諸芸）修行のため跡勤（家督相続後の初勤め）は仰せ付けられないので、小普請料を差し出すよう仰せ付けられた件。

ただし、一番組へ入ること。
一、同年十二月、芸術修行のため跡勤は仰せ付けられず、小普請にて差し置かれていたところ、この度蝦夷地一件につき、仲間一同が彼の地へ赴いて先々の御用を勤めたいとの旨を、格別の訳をもって小普請御免を下し置かれたい段を、組一同が願い出た。これにより、格別の事情がない上は容易に小普請御免は成し難いことであるが、今度の非常の御用として格別に出勤を仰せ付けられた旨、さらに文武の芸に励むべき旨が仰せ出された件。

Item: In the 12th month of Bunka 3 (Year of the Tiger), during the general mobilization for dredging the castle moat, in which foot soldiers (ashigaru) and spear-bearers (o-nagae no mono) all turned out, he himself went out and labored. Working in the mud during the cold season was an especially arduous task, yet he threw himself into it with vigor and performed admirably. As a result, he was presented with sake [as a reward].
Item: In the 5th month of the following year (Year of the Rabbit, Bunka 4), he was granted his hereditary stipend of 1,000 koku without any discrepancy. He was appointed as an "outside retainer attached to the chief elders" (go-karō-tsuki tozama-shi). Since he was not yet assigned to active duty (ato-tsutome) — being allowed time to pursue training in the arts and martial disciplines — he was ordered to submit the ko-fushin-ryō (the fee paid by those in reserve status).

Item: In the 12th month of the same year, as he had not been assigned to active duty in order to pursue his training in the arts, he had been placed in ko-fushin (reserve) status. However, on this occasion, regarding the Ezo (Hokkaido) affair, the entire group of his fellow retainers submitted a petition, stating that they all wished to travel to that region and perform service there, and requesting, citing special circumstances, that their ko-fushin status be lifted. In response, it was declared that while it would ordinarily not be easy to lift ko-fushin status without exceptional grounds, given the extraordinary nature of the present service, they were specially ordered to report for active duty, and it was further proclaimed that they should continue to diligently pursue the arts of both literature and martial training.
