**[Right folio — Continuation of songs from previous page]** *[Longing song, continued]* Whether in the darkness of night or the brightness of day, it shatters my very heart. Thirty days in a month, twelve hours in a day — every moment, at every hour, I think of you. Again and again and again. An iron cannot smooth the creases between my furrowed brows; scissors cannot cut through the grief within my heart. The embroidery needle cannot stitch the pattern of mandarin ducks. Though we both cherish feelings for each other, neither of us dares to steal a moment of tender affection. Oh, the bond between you and me — ah… (repeated refrain). *[The Passage of Cai Bojie (Tsai Po-chieh)]* Cai Bojie sits within his study and calls out: "Miss Niu, my dear beloved wife — your honored father took me in as his son-in-law, and even now, the region of Chenliú has suffered three years of drought and famine, and we endure hunger and cold. I truly wish to return home together with you, yet I cannot bear to abandon your venerable father." Again and again… *[Passage on Learning and Self-Cultivation]* One who pursues learning must first know the proper direction to face. In cultivating oneself, one must fully practice frugality, deference, gentleness, and goodness; and seeking benevolence begins from the middle path. To lie in the hall and be content in poverty, to endure hardship in the lanes — this is the aspiration of a true man. Strive hard and strengthen yourself; deeply absorb and expound upon the classics and teachings of the sages, and the light of the Kuí star will shine straight through three thousand *zhàng* of sky. *[Lovesickness passage]* This lovesickness — for your sake I suffer much grief and much anguish. This lovesickness has afflicted me with no small torment. The magpie's nest is all illusion; the lamp-flower gives no bright light. Master Zhouwang, Master… (repeated). Brother, the matter of my wellbeing — do you so easily divine it and set it aside? The words of the hexagram cannot be trusted… --- **[Left folio — Formal diplomatic letter in classical Japanese (候文style)]** I humbly present this letter. Last autumn, the Prince of Kin (金武王子) was dispatched as an envoy to convey congratulations on the succession (*継目*, *tsugime*) of your honorable domain. He returned to our country on the eighth day of mid-winter (the eleventh month), and I had the great honor of receiving your esteemed reply. Furthermore, by order of the *Tairō* (Great Elder), Kin proceeded to the castle and had the honor of an audience with your honored *Taikun* (Lord). This fills me with awe beyond measure. Moreover, regarding the true cotton wadding (*mawata*) and silver that were bestowed upon us… *(continued on following page)*
